Today, almost every child plays video games. While video games are a great source of entertainment, many experts believe that they pose risks. Regardless, parents need to decide if they want to allow their children to partake in such activities. To help you make a more informed decision, a list of reasons why children should be banned from playing video games is listed below.
Risk Of Addiction
If you ask a lot of children who play video games every day about the risk of addiction, they will probably disagree. However, experts believe that video games are addictive. There is also research to support this theory. As a parent, it is your responsibility to protect your children from these risks. How do you do this? By banning them from playing video games. Of course, this is a big decision to make, but with the help of existing research, you will find it much easier.
Increases Aggression
Depending on what type of video games your children play, it could cause an increase in aggression. Some experts have agreed that video games that contain violent content can cause children to have aggressive thoughts. In fact, parents of some of these children have reported aggressive behavior after playing violent video games.
If you have children, it is likely that they have played some type of video game. And, it is highly likely that some of those video games contained violence. Ask yourself, did my child exhibit aggressive behavior and feelings when video gaming. If you are honest with yourself, the answer will be yes.
Brain Trauma
Games and educational versions, offer some benefits for young children. Unfortunately, this cannot be said about some other genres of video games. To prove this point, researchers from the Universite de Montreal conducted a study that revealed action video games, such as Call of Duty, could harm the brain. The participants, all video gamers, learned how to navigate through video games utilizing their caudate nucleus. This learned behavior is believed to be unhealthy for young children because it increases the gray matter in the area of the brain that they are utilizing. It is also believed to reduce the gray matter in the area of the brain called the hippocampus. This results in higher risks of diseases in the brain.
Social Isolation
Playing video games for extended periods has shown to cause social isolation. Even with online video games that allow players to interact with other players can cause social isolation, according to a study conducted by the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and North Carolina State University. The study revealed that children who play video games expand on their offline social lives instead of their social lives. Of course, young gamers are going to disagree. In fact, they believe that they are being social when they play video games on social media.
Conclusion
There are many reasons why experts believed children should be banned from playing video games. However, it is up to the parents to take such actions.
