Games On Kickstarter Brought In $23 Million
2020 brought a new resurgence to games backed on Kickstarter.

Kickstarter had a magnificent performance for game projects in 2020. Over 400 projects were successfully backed and raised over $23 million, a 35% increase compared to 2019 and reaching second place just behind the $41.5 million in 2015. 1,331 video game projects were proposed, with 408 reaching their goal. The average Kickstarter goal was around $50,000, but a few select projects were able to acquire over $500,000. Stand outs that made at least $1 million included Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (CRPG sequel to Pathfinder: Kingmaker), The Wonderful 101 Remastered, and Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes (a spiritual successor to the Suikoden franchise).
Kickstarter as a whole earned $730 million in all categories over 2020, making video games just a small contribution. This isn’t surprising, as many promising ideas never reach their goals. Others that do get funded have had dubious receptions once released. Mighty No. 9 is among the most notorious - developed by Mega Man creator Kenji Inafune to replace the Capcom IP, but was riddled with bugs and lackluster gameplay. However, other mega franchises like Divinity Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity used Kickstarter to greatly expand their initial budgets.
