Week Two and Things Don't Look Good For Redfall

New data shows that things don't look good for Redfall as the vampire AAA multiplayer game has a shockingly low player count.

Player numbers for Redfall have, well… Fallen. This comes as quite a shock, considering this is only the AAA game's second week. Newly released data gives us a bit of insight into how the game is faring and it doesn't seem to be doing very well. The game's poor reception has also had a hugely negative impact on the game's developers, with one feeling a mix of both sadness and confusion over how poorly the game has been received.

Redfall was released on 2 May 2023, and is the latest title developed by longtime game developers, Arkane, who many of you may know from the Dishonored games and Deathloop.  Arkane's parent company, ZeniMax, was one of the company's acquired by Microsoft, with added help and funding, many thought that Redfall would be a smash hit, but currently Redfall is sitting as one of the lowest-rated games of all time on Steam. It also didn't help that the game was cannibalized on its same-day release on Xbox Game Pass.

Due to all this, the game launched with a miniscule player count, which basically left the game dead in the water upon its release. In the new information shared, it would seem that things have gotten even worse for Redfall as player numbers continue to plummet to all new lows. According to new activity data scraped by SteamDB, Redfall peaked at an all-time high player count of 376 concurrent players as of 16 May 2023. In the same set of data, we are also shown that the game's player count dropped below 1000 on 8 May and just continued to drop.

If this pattern continues, it is likely that Redfall will soon drop below 200 players by the end of the month. This means terrible news for the multiplayer game, especially if you compare it to other single player titles such as Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, which was a reasonably successful single-player game from 2011, which still had over 582 players as of 16 May 2023. Another good example is with one of Arkane's own single player experiences, the first Dishonored game, that had a player count of 560 concurrent players, almost 200 more players than Redfall.

Despite how absolutely desolate Redfall's player count has been, it hasn't stopped developer Arkane from developing new titles. As of writing, Arkane has already started working on their next title, which has yet to be announced.
