Overwatch Hero Symmetra Has Autism

Jeff Kaplan reveals that Symmetra has Autism

By Grayshadow, Posted 09 Mar 2017

Many of the Overwatch heroes have been fleshed out in the comics, such as Tracer's sexuality, and in the game's forums with Mercy and Roadhog's relationship. Jeff Kaplan, game director of Overwatch, has confirmed that the teleporter summoning hero Symmetra has autism.

One Overwatch fan wrote to Kaplan mentioning how they bonded with their brother by playing the game and pointed out something in the comics. Kaplan responded with:

“Dear Samuel,

I am so glad Overwatch is providing a great way for you and your brother to bond! Nothing warms our hearts more than hearing stories like yours.

I’m glad you asked about Symmetra. It was very astute of you to notice that she mentioned the spectrum in our comic. Symmetra is autistic. She is one of our most beloved heroes and we think she does a great job of representing just how awesome someone with autism can be.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write to me. I really enjoyed your letter and will share it with the rest of the team. Wishing you and your brother many fun games over Overwatch!

All the best,

(signed) Jeff Kaplan
Game Director, Overwatch”

This reveal also gives direct answers to what Symmetra refers to "the spectrum" in her comic.

Overwatch is now available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
