Interesting times are ahead for the highly touted Battlefield franchise. Although at one time thought of as a top contender to Call of Duty and the favorite among most popular multiplayer games, public perception of the series has faltered in recent years primarily as a result of gaffes during the launch period of Battlefield 2042. Although 2042's quality has largely recovered, thanks to regular patching by its developers, EA is looking to have the community thoroughly invested in its development of the next Battlefield installment.
One of its main strategies is the revamped re-launch of the community test program it now calls Battlefield Labs, the initial phase of which began over the weekend. EA has specifically mentioned that the data and feedback from the sessions of Battlefield Labs will be utilized to inform the development of Battlefield 6, or whatever its real title shall come to be.
A new leaked video has emerged from ongoing testing of Battlefield 6, revealing some of the game's levels and gameplay. EA is conducting closed playtests related to the development of the next title in the long-running Battlefield shooter franchise, though the company has yet to officially declare the game's firm release date or even title.
Though the Battlefield Labs tests themselves are only open to players who pre-registered, video has begun leaking into the public domain to demonstrate bits and pieces of what transpired in the sessions. Octaaf1999, one of the users, posted a leaked video of the Battlefield Labs test on Reddit.
Although brief and suffering from very poor resolution, the clips impressed players with their strong level of environment destruction and what looked to be strong gunplay mechanics deserving of Battlefield's reputation as a high-quality military shooter.
The brighter of the two videos boasts a player shooting a rocket into a building that shatters apart into a gigantic cloud of dust and complex debris. Players liked the video, with many drawing attention to the excitement over the previous rumors about Battlefield 6 introducing environmental destruction as one of its primary points of focus. The video had players recalling the "evolution" gimmick from the previous games, where map layouts changed as major structures collapsed.
The clips also gained praise for flaunting the game's sound design, with gunshots and sounds from the environment highlighting how Battlefield games have always been renowned for their sound design. With 3D audio positioning now being more important for shooters, thanks to the popularity of intense battle royale gameplay, having great audio will be a key selling point for Battlefield 6.
To date, reactions to the Battlefield Labs tests have been positive. If EA is on the right path with the game's development, the next Battlefield has the potential to become a staple that restores the franchise's reputation and competitiveness well into the future.
