Supermassive Games teased Directive 8020 in November 2022 at The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me's post-credits scene. Then, they waited until the PlayStation February 2025 State of Play to reveal the game’s story trailer. This spine-chilling adventure has been long anticipated for sci-fi horror games, and we finally know the details of its release.

Directive 8020, Sci-Fi, Survival Horror, Release Date

Directive 8020 depicts a crew of astronauts who crash-land on the extraterrestrial planet Tetti-F, which is 12 light-years away from Earth. As they strive for survival, they discover horrifying mysteries hidden beneath the planet's surface. The plot is choice-driven, with actions influencing the fates of the five playable protagonists, including the prospect of permanent character death.

The game combines traditional survival horror components with a few new mechanics, such as a scanner for detecting alien lifeforms and a remote device for controlling equipment. Character movement animations seem to be fine-tuned compared to previous Supermassive Games titles, providing a more immersive and responsive experience. The game's main campaign is anticipated to last 8 to 12 hours, and its branching narratives and different character arcs make it highly replayable.

Directive 8020 features a single-player mode, where players control all five characters, or multiplayer co-op, with up to five players taking on different roles. While the multiplayer option is enjoyable, anyone anticipating a more extensive online component may find it lacking in scope. The game’s soundtrack, composed by Jason Graves of The Dark Pictures Anthology, promises a terrifying atmosphere enhanced by deep sound design and ambient elements.

Directive 8020 will be released on October 2, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. While the actual pricing is still unknown, expect it to be between $50 and $70. With its fascinating story, innovative features, and replayability, this game is turning out to be a must-have for horror and sci-fi lovers. Keep an eye out for developments as the launch date nears.
