Ghost of Yōtei Bringing A Less Repetitive Open World
A dynamic, open world less repetitive than Ghost of Tsushima? Yes, please!

Sucker Punch creative directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox of Sucker Punch recently spoke with the NY Times on the difficulties of making an open-world game. With Ghost of Yōtei, the samurai sequel from Sucker Punch, players may expect a dynamic, open-world setting that is even less repetitive than Ghost of Tsushima, and an open-world setting is looking for new perspectives.
While Ghost of Tsushima received fairly positive reviews, several critics have pointed out that the plot is too repetitive. It is unclear at this time how the Ghost of Yōtei will broaden its open-world experience. As stated by the game's creative directors, the team intends to deliver more "unique experiences" compared to its 2020 PS4 predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima.
Jason Connell points out that creating an open-world game isn't always easy because of the repetitiveness of certain tasks. "We sought out one-of-a-kind experiences as a counterpoint to that."
Since Sony isn't hesitant to give other companies creative freedom with its properties, a number of PlayStation properties, including Returnal, Horizon, and Uncharted, have been adapted into comics and movies at some point. The Ghost of Tsushima franchise has plans for such extensions in the future.
Since no one knows what these additional extensions will be at this point, during the interview, Sucker Punch's intentions to expand the Ghost of Tsushima franchise outside of video games were addressed too. That involves not only the sequels but also the movie that was announced earlier.
Ghost of Yōtei was revealed during the State of Play in September 2024, and it will be released for PlayStation 5 in 2025.
