Guild Wars 2 to be released in 2011

NCSoft teased its fans with some footage back in 2007, and earlier this year, they announced that the Guild Wars sequel is on the way. There was also some news about starting in the beta-phase of the game, but since there’s only two months left in 2009, this Korean-based MMO sees little chance to be released this year. Fans would face a bit of a disappointment that Guild Wars 2 still has a long way to go.

However, in a recent post-earnings report conference call, NCSoft West CEO Jaehlo Lee announced that the sequel to the free-to-play, Korean-based MMO might enter an experimental beta phase sometime in 2011, and expects to release the full game in the same year.

"I believe there will be a certain public event in the year 2010, so at this point it could be at least a closed beta test for [Guild Wars 2 and Korea-oriented martial-arms MMOG Blade & Soul]," he said. "The commercialization will be expected at this point probably sometime in the year 2011."

Since the success of the first Guild Wars, NCSoft has released Nightfall, Prophecies, and Factions as three new campaigns, as well as releasing an expansion to the series, called Eye of the North. The first Guild Wars has also sold over 6 million units worldwide since it was released back in 2005. It will be a long wait for Guild Wars fans, but they can be certain the sequel will indeed be launched two years from now.
