After Ubisoft announced the second Assassin's Creed Shadows delay, many speculated that the company would not survive its current financial struggle. It is indeed a fact that they are currently struggling financially. The company's stock prices are at an all-time low. However, one thing we should not forget is that they still own several massively popular IPs that can easily turn the table, one of which is The Division series. Now the question is: Will Ubisoft be making The Division 3?
To answer this question, yes, The Division 3 is still happening, whether it's Ubisoft or Tencent if they truly take over the company. If we rewind to the first announcement of The Division 3 on September 2023, Julian Garrity, The Division 2's Creative Director and The Division's Associate Creative Director, mentioned that he would be returning to the franchise to develop The Division 3 as Executive Producer following the release of Star Wars Outlaws. As Massive Entertainment takes control of the development of Tom Clancy's The Division 3, Julian Garrity will be responsible for assembling the team while also ensuring the continued success of The Division series.
Putting aside everything that Ubisoft has been dealing with in the past few months, some The Division fans thought that the development started when Ubisoft mentioned The Division 3 in 2023, but in reality, that's not the case at all. Even though Ubisoft was planning to work on Far Cry 7 and Ghost Recon, they still confirmed that The Division 3 will be happening, but not before Massive Entertainment finishes working on Star Wars Outlaws.
Massive Entertainment was supposed to be focusing on The Division 3, but barely any work was done on it since Star Wars Outlaws was only released in August 2024. However, The Division 3 was featured on Massive's website in the months after Star Wars Outlaws came out. Other than that, we haven't heard anything new about The Division 3 project, except for a couple of job postings for the animation director and senior AI designer positions. You can tell the project remains in its initial stages since Ubisoft hasn't yet appointed the directors.
So it would be unwise to expect any update on The Division 3 just yet since this crew took around 4.5 years to deliver Star Wars Outlaws from the time it was first conceptualized and pre-produced in late 2019. So, the release of The Division 3 will not occur until mid-2028. Obviously, fans would hope for an early release since the game will be built on the same engine and probably use the same concept and design to cut down on production time, but that being said, it is still a AAA and will take a minimum of three years in development.
