Will Lazlow Return in GTA 6? The Beloved Writer's Comeback
Once the voice and soul of GTA's comedy, Lazlow Jones walked away from Rockstar — but his fingerprints may still be all over GTA 6.

There aren't many questions that get as much talk as "Will Lazlow be in GTA 6?" in the world of Grand Theft Auto fans. Since 2020, the man who used to write, voice, and shape the comedic core of the games has not worked for Rockstar Games. There is a very human reason for his exit.
Lazlow Jones quietly quit Rockstar to take care of his dying sister. Jones had been a writer, radio show host, and comedic genius for a long time, and created a lot of GTA's signature style. It was a personal choice that came from both family duty and a need for artistic freedom. He said that it didn't feel right to write skits and jokes when he was dealing with such serious things in real life.

But there's a third part to his leaving that has to do with the whole system. Rockstar used to be a rebellious "boys' club" studio that made edgy material, but now it's a public company backed by investors. So there is creative pressure with that change. Rockstar used to be known for its creative freedom, but now Rockstar has slow, corporate release cycles that last ten years.
This isn't the best environment for a satirist who wants to say something now, not in ten years. The voice of Lazlow wasn't just on the radio. He was a big part of making GTA's irreverent comedy possible. Not only did he work on the voice-overs, but he also co-wrote large parts of the franchise's best humor. He left his mark on everything, from riffing as a crazy talk show host to writing biting culture parodies.
Lazlow followed Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser when he left to start Absurd Ventures, a new company that will focus on stories and try to break away from the slow pace of making AAA games. Absurd Ventures focuses on telling stories, often in different forms, like radio dramas, books, and probably games, without having to wait ten years to make each one. It's going back to the roots. A place for writers to play.
Now we're back to GTA 6. Does Lazlow still fit into GTA 6 after all these years? In public, he has played down the chances: Lazlow said, "We left in 2020, so I doubt it." "I loved working on those games with Dan Houser. I did voice work for GTA 3 and all the GTA games after that. It was a great experience to work on GTA for 20 years."
There is one catch, though. It takes a long time to make a GTA game. When Lazlow left in 2020, GTA 6 was already in the works, and he had probably been a part of early pre-production. His voice, his jokes, and the way he told stories may still be in the game's code. Some of their old coworkers are still at Rockstar. His sketches, ideas, and plans could have been used, changed, or even put into action right away.
There's also a history of this. Rockstar loves meta-references and nods to the past. If Lazlow doesn't come back as a character or writer, it's hard to see GTA 6 happening without at least a nod to what he did. In a world like GTA, which is very self-aware and full of references, leaving him out would be like wiping out a part of its soul.

That's what makes his story so interesting. Lazlow didn't just leave GTA because he was done with it. He left because the GTA wasn't the same as it used to be, for better or worse. He says that Absurd Ventures has the same gritty spirit that Rockstar used to have. There are many projects going on at once, and everyone is contributing their thoughts. Something funny is being worked on by us.
That speed is important for a creative person like Lazlow. They don't want to miss the joke or wait ten years to see it land because the world has already moved on. The things that used to make Rockstar great—its speed, its rebelliousness, and its lack of fear—are now held back by its size and the needs of its shareholders.
Will Lazlow be in GTA 6 then?
Most likely not in real life. Maybe not even in voice. What about his power? Was he funny? How did he sound? It's not realistic to believe those won't be there. The sounds are still there even though he left the building. Finally, it's not important to know if Lazlow is in GTA 6. The real question is whether Rockstar can be Rockstar without him.
