Rockstar Hiding GTA 6 Online in Plain Sight, GTA Online 2 Reveal Incoming?

With GTA VI set for a May 2026 release, Rockstar is keeping GTA Online 2 under wraps, but past launch patterns, billion-dollar stakes, and April 2026 teasers may expose their secret schedule.

As people get more excited about Grand Theft Auto VI, their attention is slowly shifting from the carefully planned single-player game to Rockstar's most lucrative area: the next version of GTA Online. The main release date is set for May 26, 2026. There are still questions about when the online part will be revealed, but history gives us strong hints.

For a long time, Rockstar Games has released games according to a carefully planned schedule. Both GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 stuck to a tight, expected schedule: first work on single-player, then switch to multiplayer, but only after careful planning and typically at the last minute.

When it came to GTA V, GTA Online came out just one month before the game itself. The multiplayer mode didn't go live until two weeks after the main game did. This is what Red Dead Redemption 2 did, too. Its online mode was teased about five weeks before it came out, but it wasn't released until late November, weeks after players had become immersed in Arthur Morgan's trip.

I think Rockstar will do the same thing with GTA VI. Fans shouldn't expect any public online announcements until at least April 2026, based on past trends. That would mean a special GTA Online 2 trailer, or at least a notable amount of important information, would likely be released about a month before the game's release, similar to how Rockstar's other major hits were introduced.

The reason for this delay is both psychological and practical. Rockstar has invested a significant amount of work into GTA VI's storyline, and the trailers have revealed both Jason and Lucia as main characters. It's both creative and business-savvy to let players experience that world on their own first, without the chaos of internet multiplayer. Launching the online mode weeks later keeps Rockstar's long-held belief that artistic vision should come first before opening the sandbox to everyone. This way, the single-player story stays in the center.

That being said, things have changed. GTA Online has made more than $10 billion since it first came out. Rockstar might have to make a change to their plans because of this unheard-of success. It's not impossible that some GTA Online 2 information, teasers, or promotional breadcrumbs could come out earlier than planned. After all, the hunger never ends. Millions of players think that multiplayer is the most important part of the game, and many skip the single-player mode entirely.

However, Rockstar is not likely to change the recipe that has worked so well, even though GTA Online is a huge commercial success. The announcement of GTA 6 Online play may happen around April 2026, when people are most excited about it. A special trailer could come out a few weeks before the game comes out, maybe along with a blog post, a thorough FAQ page, or an investor call. This would give people enough time to get excited, but not so much that they lose control of the message.

When it comes to the online release, past experiences suggest that there will likely be another short wait. GTA Online 2 could have its own start window, maybe in early or mid-June. This would give Rockstar enough time to make sure the rollout goes smoothly. And unlike Red Dead Online, which went into beta to avoid having the same rough start as GTA Online, Rockstar plans to release GTA Online 2 as a fully finished game from the start. The company has had almost ten years to learn from its mistakes with multiplayer.

If something goes wrong with this schedule, it's likely because Rockstar wants to get the market's attention before other games come out or during busy periods of the year. Still, don't think that Easter weekend or any other holiday will have such a big drop—that's when Rockstar usually doesn't do it. Time accuracy is built into it.

Fans will have to wait for a while longer before they can get their first real look at what the future holds for GTA VI's online mode. Until there is a huge leak that messes up Rockstar's plans, the next era of GTA Online will stay hidden behind a curtain that will only be pulled back when it's time.
