In March indie developer Might and Delight, creator of Pid and Shelter, announced they were working on a sequel of sorts, Shelter 2. Featuring a lynx, the successor expands on the original with broader environments and more gameplay features. Stamina, movements and a larger variety of prey are included among the new features, with new maternal gameplay such as calling cubs closer and carrying the cubs away from harm available to really make you feel motherly.
Today, a press release elaborated on the adventure game, revealing that players will be able to create their family of lynxes with their own personal touch.
As the game starts up players name their mother lynx, and as she gives birth, each cub will also be needing a proper title. When the story is complete the mother lynx's children will be written into a family tree, each child playable pending survival.
Anders Westin, CEO of Might and Delight said, "We wanted to continue to build features around the concept of family, besides just protecting your cubs. And the idea of a bloodline that can be continued and evolved just fits the world of Shelter perfectly."
Furthermore, each cub from the initial litter will bear a unique color that will become more apparent with each consecutive offspring. Continuing to play Shelter 2 with the more unique creature will have players seeing genetics and evolution in play, with the end result being a uniquely distinct lynx.
Weston put it nicely saying, "Unlike the first Shelter, we want players to freely explore the world and make the experience their own. Evolving the mother is simply another step in that direction. Such a feature really fits the scale of the game and there´s something charming about raising your cubs and then being able to play through the game again with your favorite cub as the main character."
Shelter 2 will release on Steam, GOG and other digital platforms this fall, with the game's Steam page dating the title's release as August 2014.
