Nacon released Edge of Eternity in 2021, developed by a French Studio, Midgar Studio, named after the Final Fantasy 7 city, and describes Edge of Eternity as a "French touch JRPG" since it is heavily inspired by the classics of the genre.
The game features the likes of a turn-based battle system with ATB, similar to Final Fantasy, as well as a soundtrack by Yasunori Mitsuda of Chrono Trigger and Xenogears renown. While Edge of Eternity had mixed reviews at launch, the game is still a love letter to the genre and can be enjoyed by JRPG fans looking for a new twist on old tropes.
The great news is that Nacon has just revealed another JRPG, Edge of Memories, the new game from Midgar Studio, which is already being developed by an all-star team. The new game takes place in the same universe but on a different continent, such as Edge of Eternity, another JRPG in development by Midgar Studio and published by Nacon. The most exciting aspect of Edge of Memories is the all-star team that went into its making, with famous character designers, composers, and writers joining forces to lend it a touch of quality.
Moreover, the new JRPG is set in the same universe as Edge of Eternity. Edge of Memories takes place in Avaris, a planet ravaged by a plague called Corrosion. The most thrilling aspect of this new JRPG is the dream team that's working on it in collaboration with Midgar Studio. Veteran composer Yasanori Mitsuda is joined this time by Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and 3 arranger Mariam Abounnasr, along with vocalist Emi Evans, who sang for songs in NieR and NieR: Automata.
Character design is being done by Raita Kazama, with the illustrator being quite famous for his previous work on Xenoblade Chronicles X. NieR and Drakengard writer Sawako Natori has also been brought on board, and finally, Final Fantasy XV battle designer Mitsuru Yokoyama is designing the new real-time action gameplay in Edge of Memories.
The most significant difference between Edge of Eternity and Edge of Memories lies in the game's battle systems. While the former uses a turn-based system with ATB in a grid-tiled battlefield to offer greater strategy, Edge of Memories opts for a more dynamic action-based combat system. The player controls Eline, who can execute strings of combos with the help of her companions. The warrior can also consume a rage gauge to transform into a Berserker, unlocking a new set of brutal skills to turn the tide of battle.
With such an impressive lineup of industry veterans and a new combat system to boot, Edge of Memories already appears to be an electrifying next step for Midgar Studio's JRPG franchise. Where Edge of Eternity was a fitting tribute to its heritage in traditional SRPGs with its deliberate turn-based combat, the upcoming game appears set to take the series into a new and thrilling direction with frenetic action combat.
NieR, Xenoblade, and Final Fantasy enthusiasts are in for a treat, as Edge of Memories has brought development expertise from a few of the genre's most beloved titles under one roof. Development is already in progress, so it will not be long before JRPG enthusiasts get to relive another unforgettable adventure within the plague-stricken world of Avaris.
