Ōkami 2 Will Not Release Before 2028

Ōkami 2 took the world by surprise when it was revealed at the end of The Game Awards in December 2024. While Capcom remained silent about the game, Hideki Kamiya, Game Director of Ōkami 2, shared some details about Capcom's latest game. Kamiya confirmed that Ōkami 2 would be a proper sequel to the first Ōkami game.

Over two months since the surprise revelation of Ōkami 2, Capcom discussed a few more details about the game. During an interview with IGN, Kamiya was joined by Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata.

The group assured that Ōkami 2 will be a direct sequel to the original game. Although Ōkami once had a sequel in 2012's Ōkamiden for the DS, the ending of Ōkami saw both Amaterasu and Waka on a ship for the Celestial Plain after they defeated the dark god Yami.

The team also said that Ōkami 2 would be developed using Capcom's patented RE Engine, which has also been used on other titles such as Street Fighter 6 and Monster Hunter Wilds. The replacement for the RE Engine, Codename REX, will come in phases. Certain features will also be included in the current RE Engine.

In the first Ōkami game, players controlled the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu, who took the form of a white wolf to battle dark demons that plagued the land. Amaterasu was joined on most of her journey by tiny artist Issun, who provided guidance and a bit of humor.

With her Divine Instruments and Brush Techniques that can call upon elements like wind, water, and nature, Ōkami is widely considered to be one of the best games to use drawing as part of its gameplay. The ending of Ōkami left a lot of space for a sequel, although Ōkamiden took place a few years later.

Hirabayashi stated that, despite the mixed reception to Ōkamiden, the company is aware of fans who played and enjoyed the first game. That being mentioned, Kamiya and Hirabayashi both affirmed that the highly anticipated sequel is in very early development, which means fans won't hear Capcom discuss it for a little while longer before announcing more about what to expect from Ōkami 2.

The platforms for Ōkami 2 have not yet been announced. There has not been an announced release date either, so we can anticipate waiting a little longer to see how the RE Engine has enabled Kamiya-san's vision to realize his vision. Since the game is still in the early development phase, it’s highly ambitious to anticipate Ōkami 2 to be released before 2028, if not pushed to 2029.
