PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita Will Remain Open
After massive backlash Sony will continue to support the PS3 and PS Vita stores
News by Grayshadow on Apr 20, 2021
After Sony confirmed they would be ending support for the PSP, PS Vita, and PS3 stores many were livid about this decision. Mostly due to Sony having few options to preserve games only available through those digital stores. It also became apparent that certain games could not be downloaded before the due date because patches no longer being available. Sony has now reversed this decision but only for PS Vita and PS3 stores.
Sony will continue to support the PS3 and PS Vita stores but will discontinue PSP digital stores starting July 2nd.
Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned.
When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on. We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.
I’m glad that we can keep this piece of our history alive for gamers to enjoy, while we continue to create cutting-edge new game worlds for PS4, PS5, and the next generation of VR.
Despite this decision, other issues have surfaced after this blew up. The most notorious being the PS4's battery, which is a ticking time bomb. Basically, once the battery dies in about 10-20 years players who attempt to replace or fix the battery will be unable to access their physical or digital content. This because the system requires PlayStation access to update trophy information and without it, the system is basically bricked. Sony has yet to respond to this or provide an offline solution to resolve the whole matter.
