September Nintendo Direct Leak at Mario Celebration and Major Reveals

Nintendo is planning a next showcase mid-September, with rumors surrounding Mario's 40th anniversary and Metroid Prime 4 leading the buzz.

It appears that a new Nintendo Direct is likely to take place in September, indicating that Nintendo may be preparing for another major event. There have been September Directs before, but this year's possible presentation has some interesting details, such as a potential connection to Mario's 40th anniversary and new information on highly anticipated games like Metroid Prime 4.

New reports indicate that Nintendo will hold a presentation in mid-September. Historically, this aligns with the traditional approach. Since the first Direct in 2011, the studio has held one almost every September, with the noted exception of 2024.

Last year was a bit of a strange one for Nintendo. The Switch era was coming to an end, and the studio was getting ready to officially launch the Switch 2. Now that the next wave of hardware is out in the wild, it seems like it's almost time for a showcase.

The date of this reported presentation is somewhat unusual. Many people think it will happen on September 12, which is a Friday, a day that is not often chosen for general Directs. In fact, Nintendo's last general Direct on a Friday was in May 2013. This scheduling choice stands out because most presentations, even the rare ones, typically occur earlier in the week.

On the other hand, September 12 is the day before the 40th anniversary of the Mario series. Due to the timing, there has been considerable speculation that Nintendo might celebrate its most famous figure during the Direct. Since a second Mario movie is set to release next year, it makes sense for the studio to leverage nostalgia to generate excitement about the new film.

A recent rumor that surfaced on the internet suggested a September 12 date, which lends further support to this idea. It appears that Nintendo is planning something special for its fans. Even though Nintendo hasn't made any public announcements, the anniversary, the time of year, and the studio's ongoing efforts to promote the Switch 2 all make the rumor seem more plausible.

Of course, after speculations and rumors, people naturally start to wonder what games Nintendo might be focusing on. Metroid Prime 4 remains the most significant question mark in the studio's lineup. Fans are eager for a firm release date after years of silence. Kirby Air Riders is already set to come out on November 20, so many people think Metroid Prime 4 could come out in late October or early November, making it Nintendo's big fall release.

If so, a Direct in September would be the best time to fully set the record straight. Metroid Prime 4 might also get its own Direct, away from the main show. Nintendo has done this before with Pokémon and Super Smash Bros., offering focused demos that provided in-depth details about the games' gameplay and features. Still, giving at least a preview or release date during the general Direct would help calm down fans who have been waiting since the game was first shown off in 2017.

In the long term, Nintendo will probably use this Direct to set the tone for the first year that the Switch 2 is available. The system is already sold out in Japan, despite there being only a few left. This means the studio must carefully balance serving the original Switch while maintaining momentum for its new console.

Nintendo's strategy during what appears to be a pivotal transitional period could be better understood by unveiling plans for 2026, along with updates for current games. For now, everything remains just a theory, mixed with rumors and new reports.

However, since many reports indicate that the show will take place in September, everyone will be watching Nintendo to see if the studio sticks to its custom or surprises everyone with a show on a Friday. September could be one of the most exciting months for Nintendo again, with a Mario anniversary party, the long-awaited release of Metroid Prime 4, or new treats for the Switch 2.
