Star Wars KOTOR Remake Release Update

Star Wars KOTOR Remake release could still be a long way off as Saber Interactive likely to start development from scratch.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was an instant success in 2003, praised by everyone. It won several Game of the Year awards and sold over 3.2 million copies. The branching storyline, moral choice systems, and deep character development set a new benchmark for RPGs. Star Wars fans have been demanding more sequels in addition to a remake of KOTOR.

However, a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has been in development. The game was originally planned to be developed by Aspyr, but it was then handed over to Saber Interactive, most likely because Aspyr's demo was not of the quality that Sony desired for this remake, or perhaps the Disney directors rejected it.

Saber Interactive, the developers of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, which has been NoobFeed Best Action Games of 2024, not to mention World War Z and even the upcoming AAA Avatar The Last Airbender game known as Avatar: ICE WARS. The studio has just announced that they will be developing two open-world AAA RPGs, one of which will be Avatar: ICE WARS, and the other one is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake.

Matthew Karch, CEO of Saber Interactive, has said that they're working on a recreation of KOTOR. He stated, "It is clear and obvious that we are working on this." He also mentioned that it had appeared in the press countless times. The game is alive and well, and we are committed to exceeding consumer expectations.

Even though Karch did not provide any additional information, in an Earnings Conference Call following Saber's resignation, Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors hinted that the remake could be a long way off. The game has been in limbo for a long time. It was revealed in 2021 after three years of production at Aspyr, then suspended indefinitely owing to a lack of progress before being relaunched at Saber Interactive.

When Beacon Interactive purchased back Saber Interactive for $247 million, it contained at least 38 video game projects, over 3,000 personnel, and companies such as Nimble Giant, Madhead Games, Slipgate, New World Interactive 3D Rounds, and all Saber-branded studios. And with Saber Interactive's track record of games, particularly this year's Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

Of course, this game was launched as a limited-time PlayStation exclusive, but we assume all of those deals are no longer in effect, especially since the project was transferred to Saber Interactive and became a completely new project.  This will most likely be a multi-platform product, but there is still a chance that Sony will step in and fund it. This game will likely remain a multi-platform title rather than the PlayStation exclusive that it was initially planned to be.

Furthermore, we anticipate that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake will be released between 2027 and 2028, maybe for the next generation of consoles, as Saber Interactive will most likely have to start from scratch and scrap that three years of development at Aspyr in order to produce the game they envision. However, Aspyr developed the STAR WARS: Battlefront Classic Collection and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered, both of which were quite good.

There is so much that can be expanded upon in this game that it could be treated as an open-world title, with the mission areas greatly expanded with a lot more to do and a lot more side quests sprinkled throughout. There is no word or confirmation yet on what type of combat we will see in this game, but we hope to hear more from Saber Interactive as soon as the development reaches a certain milestone.
