As The Legend of Zelda's 40th anniversary in 2026 gets closer, rumors about Nintendo's plans for the big event are spreading faster than ever. There are numerous credible leaks, small crossovers in the game, and official teases that make it clear that something big is coming for one of the most popular video game franchises.

After the Animal Crossing update presentation, which unexpectedly revealed that Zelda-themed items would be arriving in January 2026, hints began to appear. That might seem like a small thing on its own. But when you add in rumors of new remakes, a live-action Zelda movie, and even a Lego Ocarina of Time set, it looks more like the start of a big anniversary campaign.

Nash Weedle, an industry insider known for getting the details right about Switch 2, stated that Nintendo has four Zelda-related events planned for 2026. There are a lot of rumors going around about what will occur, from new game releases to theme park expansions and concert tours.

Many fans think that Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker's long-rumored HD versions might finally be made available as anniversary editions for the newest console generation.

There have been rumors about a remake of Ocarina of Time for more than two years, so it's also very likely. It's easy to see why: every major Nintendo console gets a big Zelda game early on in its life. Since Tears of the Kingdom is still relatively new, the next best option would be a reimagined classic that combines old-school charm with modern technology.

A remake of Ocarina of Time made with the Tears of the Kingdom engine could be the best way to connect the two games.

The plan would be similar to what Nintendo did for Mario's 40th birthday and the release of the Mario movie: a mix of remasters, merchandise, and media synergy that kept the franchise in the news throughout the year. The live-action Zelda movie, set for release in 2027, further develops this idea.

Producing anniversary content in 2026 would not only honor the series' history but also help build excitement for the movie's release. It makes perfect sense from a business perspective. Zelda is still one of Nintendo's most popular franchises, and games like Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD, which are based on nostalgia, would be easy wins.

If you combined them with a new Ocarina of Time remake, the anniversary would last all year, celebrating both the franchise's past and its future.

Nintendo hasn't said anything official about this, but since they like to celebrate anniversaries, it's safe to say that something special is coming up. The 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda will be a big deal for fans. There will be re-releases, live performances, and creative collaborations.

If the Ocarina of Time remake and the return of two HD classics are indeed released in 2026, it would be a fitting way to honor 40 years of adventure, new ideas, and great stories.
