Zelda's 40th Anniversary: What Could Nintendo Have Planned for 2026?

A potential Ocarina of Time remake, theme park expansions, and even tie-ins to the upcoming Zelda movie.

Nintendo is preparing to commemorate The Legend of Zelda's 40th anniversary in February 2026, and there is considerable speculation about how the company will mark one of the most recognizable game titles. Given the upcoming release of a new console generation, a massive movie, and continuous theme park expansions, it appears that Nintendo has enormous plans for Zelda's milestone year.

Another important development is the upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie, which is set to come out in May 2027. Like Nintendo did with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the company is likely to put out a consistent stream of ads in the weeks leading up to the movie's release. Fans could get a closer look at the cast and production with a special Nintendo Direct focused solely on Zelda's big-screen debut.

Areas for Mario and Donkey Kong are already beginning to take shape at Universal's Super Nintendo World, which is still growing internationally. Images of producer Eiji Aonuma and Shigeru Miyamoto touring theme park locations have only served to heighten rumors that a full Zelda expansion is in the works. In that case, the first version would probably go to Japan, then Orlando and Los Angeles.

However, the most important question still stands: which video games could serve as the focal point of Zelda's 40th anniversary, aside from films and theme parks? Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, a musou-style spin-off that has been hinted at for release in winter, is among the most plausible contenders.

The anniversary campaign would be ideally aligned with that ambiguous window, which may mean December 2025 or January 2026. It would provide fans with new Zelda material to start the celebration, even though it wouldn't be a mainline entry. Then there is the enduring notion that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is finally being prepared for a complete remake by Nintendo.

According to a new report, the project's visual direction underwent a change a few years ago, indicating a more comprehensive makeover rather than a straightforward remaster. An Ocarina remake is more likely than ever, given Nintendo's history of playfully refusing to comment when questioned about such projects—Aonuma's no comment responses are frequently telling.

The timing is appropriate. With 15 years having passed since the release of Ocarina of Time 3D for its 25th anniversary in 2011 and 27 years since the original N64 debut, Nintendo may see this as an ideal opportunity to bring the classic back to the Switch 2.

Restoring the significance of characters like Rauru, who has made a comeback in more recent games like Tears of the Kingdom, and incorporating new plot aspects or playable dungeons may make the remake a must-have experience. Naturally, the long-rumored Wii U ports of Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD continue to loom large over the discussion.

Since Wind Waker was added to GameCube NSO, some fans have lost hope, but Nintendo's marketing team has made it clear that HD versions are not always excluded from NSO releases. It still makes financial sense for Nintendo to reissue two of the most cherished franchise titles to Switch 2 owners who have never used a Wii U, even though nothing is definite.

There are other, less likely, possibilities. If Ocarina of Time is approved, a Majora's Mask remake might follow, and specialized DS titles like Spirit Tracks or Phantom Hourglass would theoretically receive updated ports with conventional controls. However, if we look at Nintendo's past moves, it is likely to concentrate on a single remake, in addition to a variety of ports, products, concerts, and anniversary celebrations.

It's also important to keep in mind that Nintendo usually takes five to seven years to build their large 3D Zelda titles. A brand-new entry is years away, following Tears of the Kingdom in 2023 and Echoes of Wisdom in 2024. Therefore, the most secure option for 2026 appears to be ports and remakes.

In the end, as usual, Nintendo's management of the Zelda 40th anniversary remains shrouded in mystery. However, 2026 appears set to be one of the most significant years in the franchise's history due to the impending film, theme park expansions, the possibility of high-profile remakes, and a devoted fan base ready for nostalgia.

The Legend of Zelda has remained a mainstay of gaming culture for forty years after its debut on the Famicom. Nintendo won't let this milestone go unnoticed, whether it's through a year-long marketing campaign, long-awaited Wii U ports, or a fresh remake of Ocarina of Time.
