Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Episode 2

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Episode 2 is an action blockbuster with very little filling

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Episode 1 left the player guessing about the future of the game’s protagonist, but episode 2 does little to maintain this interest. Players are placed the player back into the shoes of Barry Burton and Claire Redfield as they attempt to survive their nightmarish hell, but instead of focusing on the story this episode centers on action and item management. Capcom does attempt to mix things up by adding new enemy types, but don’t come into episode hoping for more answers will be disappointed.

Taking place right after the events of Episode 1 both parties have new problems to contend with, Barry is still searching for both Claire and his daughter while Claire and Moira try to escape the island while their captor watches them. Claire and Moira run into other captives from TerraSave who are doing their best to survive. It’s here that players learn about how the virus is triggered and face off against a large amount of enemies. While it’s a good chance to test your item management skills, due to the sheer number of enemies, poor ally AI will cause players massive vexation. Multiple times I came across ally players still refusing to move while in the line-of-sight of my targeting reticle.

Barry’s section also adds new enemy types and puts Natalia’s abilities to better use. Faced with a new type of invisible enemy Natalia is the only one who can see these creatures, Barry must rely on Natalia’s direction to kill the bug-like humanoid creature.

The story does little to drive the plot forward. Instead it focuses on establishing weak supporting characters, touching on certain assumptions the player may have made during episode 1, and forcing the player through a series of mini-battles. Episode 2 ends on a high-note, leaving the player with an enticing ending for both Claire and Barry, it’s clear that focus here is action and not plot driven. The mixture of new enemy types does add tension, especially when faced with invisible or more powerful creatures, but after overuse these enemies simply become another easily tackled barricade.

Just like Episode 1, players can upgrade their equipment and character by collecting gun parts and earning BP points by completing challenges and collecting gems. Hidden documents littered throughout the campaign are entertaining finds, detailing the lives of the inhabitants before the outbreak.

Episode 2 adds two more characters for Raid mode for those seeking to test their skills. TerraSave members Pedro and Gabe have been added to the mix for those looking for new avatars to play with. Like other characters these two have their own assortment of unique advantages and disadvantages.

Episode 1 ended with a compelling cliffhanger that entices the player to come back for episode 2. While episode 2 does leaves the same sense of mystery at the end the dry action sequences that fill the journey does little to excite the player. As a filler episode it does fulfill small requirements, delivering a modicum of information and touching on assumptions that many players assumed from the beginning of Episode 1. At most Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Episode 2 is an action blockbuster with very little filling.
