DiRT 3

By canana, Posted 02 Dec 2010

DiRT is without any doubt, one of the greatest racing games of this generation. Along with Race Driver: GRID, also developed by Codemasters, the title is always considered a vital game for those looking for speed - and dust - in the world of electronic entertainment. The franchise already has two successful games, but it seems the developer is far from the finish line. The reason? DiRT 3 is coming. The third game of the franchise promises to return to the roots and also bring several new vehicles and improvements in the formula.

Well, many of the players who enjoyed DiRT complained about the lack of fidelity to the real-life rallies. Indeed, DiRT was more arcade than simulator. However, Codemasters promises to please Greeks and Trojans with the arrival of this new game, as it should be "the greatest racing game that Codemasters has created," as mentioned by the company itself. This statement becomes clear when the company mentions that the cars will be available in the game. Several vehicles will be recognized by those who follow the sport as well as the pilots who master the machines.

The car selection promises to be quite varied, starting from the Pat Moss' Mini Cooper S to the Peugeot 207 S2000 of Kris Meeke. The cool thing is that DiRT 3 will also have three vehicles categorized according to their year of release. Players can check out the great classics of the 1970s, as the Lancia Stratos and several others. Moreover, cars from the 1980s ( Quattro S1, RS2000 and Peugeot 205) and 1990 (Celica, Lancia Delta Integrale and 555 Colin McRae Subaru) also appear in the title.

In your journey, you will address several different locations. Among the new, we have Finland, Norway and Monte Carlo. The license of the World Rally Championship is also in the game, ensuring official tracks and other details that should keep DiRT 3 interesting. Ken Block, the American who represents the Dirt series, has just entered in the Premium League category, representing a great time for both the competitor and to Codemasters.

The title promises to deliver a less glamorous presentation, with menus and without much monochrome decorations and effects outside the race. However, during the competition the player must be presented with spectacular visuals, thanks to a new lighting system designed by the company. Moreover, the atmospheric promises to be close to reality once again, bringing rain, sun and snow.

One interesting gameplay mode is the Compound, a kind of open arena that can be played both online and offline. There you will find several ramps and the objects that seem straight out of a skate park. The objectives vary here, but be prepared for many mini games. The cool thing is that you can take all this with a friend via split-screen multiplayer - a debut in the series. As for gameplay itself , Codemasters promises to adjust the formula for DiRT 2, balancing it so that both fans of the arcade games and simulators can enjoy. Something new is in the replays, since it is now possible to send them to Facebook at the touch of a button.

DiRT 3 has everything to be a good bet for Codemasters. Several cars, different locations, weather effects and multiple game modes are just some reasons to stay alert to the title, which should hit stores in 2011 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

I still play DiRT2 occasionally and in last few weeks I had this feeling that the game's getting bored. I hope the sequel doesn't delay too much. Let's see how the atmospheric improvements are coming. Beside variety of locations and tracks, atmosphere is perhaps the only reason I love driving in DiRT.
