Bionic Commando Rearmed 2

Bionic Commando is a classic. Bionic Commando Rearmed tried to bring the old formula to the current generation of consoles with very expressive visuals. Now, Capcom had the idea to do a sequel for Rearmed, presented briefly at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) this year. Indeed, this sequel is nothing more than a set of additions to the traditional concept of the franchise. New levels, changes in gameplay and the most important of all: the ability to jump.

The sequel brings back Nathan Spencer, now redesigned in search of an agent missing in a country run by a dictator. The story takes place some years after the first Rearmed, and works exactly the same way: it's a 2D side scroller, where the character follows from left to right on the screen, battling enemies and overcoming obstacles.

For many fans it might seem that the new command to make the character jump on screen is an outrage, but the reports made by critics who were at the event in Los Angeles suggests otherwise. Jumping is great and only improves the formula acclaimed by many. Thus, combining actions (like jumping and using the well-known hook) will be something along the intuitive experience. After all, the character's safety is at stake and must be protected at any cost. The information shows that apparently the design phase has been carefully designed so that players do not abuse the new command. So jump becomes just a complementary movement that is applied at certain times while the character walks sideways across the screenn

Also new are the Components, items found along the scenarios that provide new capabilities that enhance the character. You can attach a grenade launcher to the bionic arm, or acquire the ability to automatically recover the energy. To assist the players in the search, Capcom included the Bio Vision mode scenario that provides information on enemies and reveal hidden objects. One of the new weapons of Nathan is the Napalm Gun. Exactly: a burst of fire, it spat the gun and scans the scenario ahead. Except that great care is because the fire can inflict damage if the fighter remains stationary while firing. Of course the good old weapons are back, as the pistol and shotgun. It should be stressed that the shotgun is always helpful for blasting barrels near enemies.

At E3, a coastal village was presented with the Bionic Commando moving up several times with the aid of the hook. But the paths to be followed are not necessarily linear, since there is a chance to discover secret areas. Exploration was part of the gameplay of the first Rearmed, but even more important in the new game.

Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 can be played by two players, but only locally. Therefore, no online play for the title. The company said the reason for this is the need to formulate strategies, which is impossible if one player does not have a headset.

Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 has no release date scheduled yet, but should arrive in 2011 to XBox360 and PS3 via its digital channels (Xbox Live and PlayStation Network).

  • It's a nice idea trying to implement the old game type into current gen. At least the old school gamers will appreciate it.
