Dead Space 2: Demo

The demo version of Dead Space 2 - available for download on PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Marketplace - brings a  small and spicy taste about what's to come. We tried the demo and once again we got ourselves good scares with the new edition of the franchise.

The main protagonist, Isaac Clarke, is back. The difference is that this time, he is no longer a peaceful guy in space. His first encounter with the Necromorphs turned him into a hardened warrior. Thus, Isaac Clarke returns tougher than ever, breaks down while screaming, punches and tramples on the Necromorphs. The suspense atmosphere, sharped gameplay and quality graphics are elements that worked in the first edition of the franchise are used once again.

Among the most exciting new features is the kinetic manipulation, a sort of technological telekinesis. With this new power, the protagonist can move objects at a distance, using them to solve puzzles or to attack hordes of Necromorphs. For example, if you're low on ammo instead of starting up the monster for some blows exchange, Isaac Clarke can simply use a member from another creature to impale his opponent. In the same line of enforcement, Javelin Gun is another new weapon that comes in handy. The gun fires a kind of dart capable of trowing the opponent away and stick it on the wall, leaving him vulnerable to the total dismemberment.

Another interesting element is how the game deals with situations in zero gravity. Unlike what happened in the original title, which you could only enter or leave at zero gravity environments, Dead Space 2 has two sequences where you will effectively alter the severity of certain sectors of the scenario. In the demo version, Isaac Clarke should turn off the generator's gravitational power station to access a previously unreachable area.

The new weapons and powers are very well applied against new opponents. Besides the traditional Necromorphs that plagued the life of Isaac in the first game, you also find new (and even more intimidating) foe variations. The Puker and the Pack are two good examples. The Puker is a grotesque being able to immobilize the player with his vomit. This is not a problem (!), but when you're surrounded by a swarm of murderous aliens not being able to move is very bad. The Pack is a horde of children who attack in the group surrounding the victim. Children who have suffered mutations due to virus exposure attack mercilessly and ensure some lively action sequences that can make you scream of terror.

The cutscenes keep scaring the players. The demo shows that the environment is as sinister as the original, but with much more action. The final sequence, which ends the brief demo of the game, shows giant creatures, complemented with interactive moments (quick time events). Dead Space 2 will please fans of the series. New weapons, powers, enemies and fears keeps up the action, which is more awesome than ever. Visceral Games' title is scheduled for January 25, 2011 for PS3, PC and Xbox 360.
