The Progress Tree is how you move forward in Death Howl. Each Realm has its own Progress Tree. Knowing how these trees work lets you get cards and powers that change how you play in that Realm.

Realm-Specific Progress Trees

Each Realm has its own Progress Tree. When progressing through a Realm, you should focus first on unlocking its triggerable ability and its Spirit Cards. These two paths define how the Realm functions during combat and how you gain value from enemy encounters.

Triggerable Realm Abilities

Every Realm has a triggerable ability tied to a gauge. This gauge fills when you perform a specific action. Once the indicator is complete, you can activate the ability for an immediate effect in Death Howl.

In the Realm of Piercing Winds, the Overwhelmed gauge fills when you use Block. When the gauge is filled and activated, it restores one mana. Overwhelmed abilities can be upgraded through the Progress Tree, allowing you to improve their effect or efficiency.

Spirit Card Path

Another primary path in the Progress Tree unlocks Spirit Cards. These cards are granted temporarily after you defeat a spirit. They last only for the turn in which the spirit is killed.

Spirit Cards can deal direct damage or apply utility effects. Some allow you to trade ten damage to an enemy if you are adjacent and have not moved. Spirit Cards obtained from poisonous enemies often remove one poison stack when used.

Further upgrades in the Progress Tree improve the Spirit Card path. Such changes are helpful, particularly when they reduce the mana cost of Spirit Cards in a Realm.

In some cases, this costs no mana, so you can play them in Death Howl without paying anything.

Reading A New Realm’s Focus

You can get an idea of how a new Realm is built by looking at its Progress Tree when you enter one. The Overwhelmed gauge is usually filled by an action that shows what the Realm's deck is based on. This shows you exactly which mechanics Death Howl's Realm wants you to use in battle.
