Understanding how Card effects work is required to manage turns correctly in Death Howl. Many cards change value based on when and how they are played during a turn.

First Card Effects

Some cards have extra effects that only work if they are the first card you play on your turn. These First affects often change how well you can protect yourself or how resources move. For example, you might have to pay three mana for a card, but when you play it first, you get two mana back.

Another card may apply damage and also grant two stacks of Block if used first. Movement actions do not count as card plays, so repositioning before playing a card does not prevent a First effect from triggering.

In most situations, you should begin your turn by playing a card with a First effect. You should break this order only if another condition is more valuable in Death Howl.

Still Effects and Movement Restrictions

One reason to delay a First card is the Still ability. Cards with Still effects activate only if you have not moved during the turn. This includes normal movement, which costs one mana per tile, and card-based movement, such as Sprint. If either form of movement is used, the Still condition fails.

Still effects can apply actions such as attacking twice or returning the card to your hand once per turn. Because these effects depend on remaining stationary, you must plan your turn order before committing to movement or card plays.

Last Card Effects

Last abilities activate if the card is the final one played before ending your turn. These effects resolve at the end of the turn. Cards with Last effects typically cost zero mana and focus on defense.

One example allows you to retain Block stacks into the next turn, while also granting additional Block when played last in Death Howl.

Based on observed behavior, normal movement after playing a card does not appear to prevent a Last effect from activating, as long as no additional cards are played afterward.

Turn Planning Considerations

You need to think about all three effects—First, Still, and Last—when you plan a turn. Decide if you need to move, which effects are the most useful, and then play your cards in that order. If you put the cards in the wrong order, the effects might not work as well in Death Howl.
