Valve recently introduced a gameplay recording feature that Steam was missing and has confirmed that all Steam users can now screen record gameplay without the need for additional software. This feature was in the beta phase for some time, but it's fully released now.
How to Record gameplay using Steam Game Recording?
To access the Steam Game Recording feature, launch the Steam Client and go to Steam > Settings > Game Recording. You might also find it under Steam Clint > View > Recordings & Screenshots.
You can choose between the below settings:
- Off/Don't Record (won't record anything)
- Record in Background (records whenever you play games)
- Record on Demand (records only when you turn it on).
Turning on Steam's automatic recording feature as you play makes it easy to capture gameplay footage to share with friends and family. You can customize the audio, add shortcut keys, and more, all while keeping your recordings from taking up too much space on your hard disk.
Alternatively, you can manually begin and end a screen recording session by pressing Ctrl + F11. The duration of the screencast, its quality, and the amount of storage space can all be restricted via the options settings. Your gameplay recordings will be saved as MP4 files in the Steam Overlay folder. You can then share them using links that look like QR codes.
Once you've clicked the "Clip" button and adjusted the start and finish locations, a "Save/Share" or "Share" button will appear beside other choices:
How To Share or Save a Clip Using Steam Game Recording?
Save in Steam: This feature allows you to save the clip in its current state to your Steam Recordings & Screenshots folder so you can access it later for editing or sharing. (Creating clips is an ideal way to avoid accidentally erasing your most memorable experiences.)
Export Video File: Save your video as an mp4 file.
Copy to Clipboard: You can copy and paste this the same way you would with any other file on your computer.
Move to Another Device: Copy the clip and paste it into a newly logged-in computer or Steam Deck. Your video will be downloaded automatically the next time you log into Steam on that device (this might take a couple of days).
Make a Share Link: Steam will hold your clip and give you a link that people can use to share it. The link will expire in two days.
Steam Game Recording has the Markers feature that allows you to swiftly navigate to particular occurrences in your game history, such as when you grabbed a screenshot or received an accomplishment.
For instance, when you defeat a boss or enter a new level, eligible games can add such events to the timeline. Support for timeline markers is coming to additional games, but for now, it's only available in Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2. This function isn't exclusive to Steam; the Steam Deck also allows you to record games to either internal storage or an SD card.
According to Valve, the Steam Game Recording feature has been formally released from beta and is now available to all Steam players. It does not require any additional software. Since the summer, the upgraded Steam client for Windows PCs and Macs has made Steam Game Recording available to everyone. However, users running Windows 7, Windows 8, macOS High Sierra 10.13, and macOS Mojave 10.14 are no longer supported.
