Finally, a bit of good news to share from Nvidia of all companies. While not officially announced, Lenovo spec pages on their own website suggest that Nvidia is launching a 12GB VRAM RTX 5070 for laptops.

This is an increase from 8GB, and it is a significant development. 8GB of VRAM has increasingly become a limitation in modern gaming, especially at higher settings and resolutions, which GPUs like the RTX 5070 are designed to handle.

Why 8GB VRAM Has Been a Problem

If you're unaware, 8GB of VRAM can throttle performance in modern games, particularly when running at high settings and high resolutions. Most gaming laptops equipped with RTX 5070 GPUs come with high-resolution displays, commonly around 2560x1600, and even higher in creator-focused machines. These resolutions demand more VRAM to maintain smooth performance.

We previously tested how 8GB VRAM affects gaming laptop performance, and the results showed noticeable degradation in certain scenarios. The most significant impact was seen in 1% lows. These are critical because they represent performance during the most demanding moments in gameplay, such as large team fights or scenes with heavy explosions. You definitely don’t want frame drops during those moments.

Keep in mind, those earlier tests were conducted on hardware comparable to an RTX 4060. As you move up to an RTX 5070, which is capable of higher settings and performance, the VRAM limitation becomes even more pronounced.

How 12GB VRAM Changes the Game

Moving to 12GB of VRAM allows the RTX 5070 to perform as it should. You can push higher settings and resolutions without running into the same bottlenecks. This makes the GPU far more suitable for modern gaming demands.

Laptops with an RTX 5070 also tend to sit in a pricing sweet spot. Once you move up to an RTX 5070Ti or higher, the frames-per-dollar value typically decreases. So, improving the RTX 5070 with more VRAM makes it an even more compelling option.

Portability vs Performance Trade-Off

You might not realize this, but laptops with an RTX 5070Ti have a different motherboard than laptops with an RTX 5080 or RTX 5090. Most of the time, these equipment are bigger and harder to move around. On the other hand, RTX 5070 laptops come in smaller, more compact models like the Razer Blade 14.

This makes the upgraded RTX 5070 even more appealing, as you get better performance without sacrificing portability.

RTX 5070 vs. RTX 5070 Ti: Important Differences

That said, you should not expect a 12GB RTX 5070 to match the performance of an RTX 5070Ti. Even with the same VRAM capacity, the RTX 5070Ti remains a more powerful GPU. It features more CUDA cores, higher memory bandwidth, and greater power delivery.

The RTX 5070Ti can boost up to 140W, while the RTX 5070 is limited to 115W. These differences ensure that the RTX 5070Ti maintains a clear performance advantage.

Impact on Laptop Manufacturers

Nvidia’s lack of communication about this upgrade has likely caused issues for laptop manufacturers. At CES, some devices were criticized for switching from an RTX 5070Ti to an RTX 5070, such as redesigned models in popular gaming laptop lineups.

However, if those RTX 5070 models turn out to include 12GB VRAM, the situation changes. In some cases, manufacturers were not even utilizing the full power potential of the RTX 5070 Ti, capping it at 115W—the same as the RTX 5070.

In such scenarios, switching to a smaller, more efficient design may not negatively impact performance and could actually be beneficial.

Buyer Beware: 8GB vs. 12GB Variants

One important detail to keep in mind is that both 8GB and 12GB versions of the RTX 5070 may exist. Listings on Lenovo’s site suggest that the 8GB variant is not going away. This will likely create confusion in the market.

You need to be very careful when choosing a laptop to ensure you are getting the 12GB version if performance matters to you.

Final Thoughts

It appears that Nvidia may finally be responding to long-standing concerns from gamers. While this upgrade might seem like a minimal step, it addresses a critical bottleneck and significantly improves the usability of the RTX 5070 in modern gaming scenarios.

Now, the key question remains pricing. With ongoing memory supply challenges, it will be important to see how manufacturers price laptops equipped with the 12GB RTX 5070.

Overall, this change is a welcome improvement, and it has the potential to make RTX 5070 laptops far more competitive and practical for both gaming and creative workloads.
