Valve hasn't said anything about the Steam Frame yet, so we don't know when it will be available. A new sale on Steam VR in September has added another piece of information to the puzzle about the headset. The sale will run from September 14th to September 21st, which is near the end of summer and may fall within the launch window for Steam Frame.

Valve has emailed some developers about a Steam VR sale beginning Monday, September 14th and running through September 21st. The timing has raised questions because Valve is also preparing to release the Steam Frame. A VR game sale during a possible headset launch window would make sense. The sale also ends just before September 22nd, which marks the astronomical end of summer.

Valve Steam Frame Launch in September Steam VR Sale

Valve Plans a Steam VR Sale in September

That creates another possible connection to Valve's previous claim that the Steam Frame would arrive before the end of summer. Could the Steam Frame launch between September 14th and September 21st? September 21st falls on a Monday, which is one of the days Valve has used to announce new hardware. September 14th is also a Monday, as is September 7th and August 31st.

At this point, the September VR sale does not confirm anything. It may simply be a regular Steam VR promotion, but the timing has made the possibility worth discussing. The wait for the Steam Frame announcement continues, with several possible launch dates under discussion. A community poll currently has 32% of voters expecting the headset to launch during the Gamescom window from August 25th to August 30th.

Another growing group expects an announcement or release between August 31st and September 1st. Other predictions point to Labor Day week or mid-September, while some expect the launch between September 19th and September 22nd. Around 10% of voters selected "never," suggesting that some people have stopped expecting the Steam Frame to arrive.

The discussion has also turned toward the different definitions of summer. Meteorological summer ends on September 1st, while astronomical summer ends on September 22nd. If Valve is referring to astronomical seasons, the company could technically launch the Steam Frame as late as September 21st and still meet its end-of-summer statement.

Steam Frame Software Development Continues

Another development involves Lanton, the software that allows Windows games to run on ARM. It received its first update in 5 days, which could matter for the Steam Frame. The more frequently the software updates, the better the experience on an ARM-based Steam Frame could be. Software support will be an important part of the headset if Valve expects it to handle Windows games alongside Steam content.

Speculation also surrounds the Steam Frame's price. The headset could cost well over $1,000, although Valve has previously indicated that it would be cheaper than the Valve Index. The price remains one of the biggest unknowns surrounding the Steam Frame. A community poll asking whether the headset will cost under or over $1,000 currently has the over-$1,000 option leading at 53%.

Valve may have originally planned to position the Steam Frame below the Index, but the hardware market has changed. The Steam Frame is expected to be a standalone headset with its own chipset, RAM, and storage rather than relying entirely on a separate PC. RAM prices have also increased over the past year, while Snapdragon APUs are expected to see double-digit price increases starting September 1st.

We also have to consider the difference between the Steam Frame and the Valve Index. The Index relies on a computer for its processing, while the Steam Frame is expected to contain the hardware needed to operate as a standalone device. That adds more components to the headset and makes rising memory and chipset costs have a bigger impact on the final price.

New VR-related game developments are also underway.

Little Nightmares VR, Altered Echoes, and Moss 2 VR are among the games receiving attention, while a standalone build of Richie's Plank Experience is also being prepared for Steam Deck. Windlands 2 is another VR title mentioned in connection with the upcoming ecosystem. With more VR games in development, the software side of the Steam Frame launch could include a range of titles.

Despite the growing speculation, Valve has still not provided a launch date. That silence has made every new development, from the Steam VR sale to software updates, part of the ongoing discussion.

An announcement on Monday, August 31st would allow Valve to confirm the Steam Frame before September begins. If that does not happen, the wait could continue into September, potentially reaching September 14th or even September 21st.

It's been harder to move around the Steam Frame because of its instability. Fans are waiting for Valve to announce when the headset will be available, how much it will cost, and to provide more details about it. Until then, the September sale on Steam VR is just another possible sign that the Steam Frame will be released.
