In Returnal, the main mystery unfolds through a cycle that restarts after each defeat. Every reset brings you back to the start and helps you learn how to move farther across Atropos. The cycle shapes your progress and teaches you how to handle each biome.

Beating the Cycle

Returnal is a roguelike with bullet-hell combat. You move through procedurally generated zones, avoid projectiles, and deal with layouts that shift each time.

When you fall, you lose almost all your progress and have to start again. The areas remain familiar, but room layouts, enemies, and items change with each cycle. Over time, you learn the structure of each region, find shortcuts, and reach later biomes more quickly.

After your first encounter with Phrike, the structure of the game becomes clearer. Repeated attempts help you understand each zone, and you eventually move through early areas with purpose in Returnal.

In each Biome, making progress takes many tries. Some cycles last longer than others. A few runs end very quickly. How far you get depends on what choices you make and what things you find during the run. Some cycles give you tools that help you make progress over time, while others don't. Keep going through the restarts without thinking about what happened before.

Navigating the Map

Each cycle builds a new map from different room types, enemies, and item placements. Even if you see a room again, its contents may differ. You can navigate effectively by understanding door types. All doors shine before you enter and turn gray after use in Returnal.

Light-blue rectangular doors line the main route to the boss arenas. The orange objective marker guides you toward portals that lead to later biomes.

Dark blue triangular doors lead to optional rooms. These rooms may include items, puzzles, or terminals such as the Reconstructor. Some of these doors need a key.

Doors with a broken circle lead to biome portals. After defeating Phrike, you gain the Crimson Key, which opens the Crimson Gate to the second biome. After defeating Ixion, you gain access to a portal in the first biome that leads to the third biome once you obtain the Grappling Hook.

Yellow doors with a star symbol lead to Containment Gates. These rooms seal when you enter. You must clear several waves of enemies. When you finish, you receive Obolite, and the last foe drops a weapon.

Using Parasites

Parasites do one good thing and one bad thing. For instance, a parasite might heal you when you're low on strength but weaken your melee attack in Returnal.

You can attach more than one parasite as long as their penalties are still doable. You might also find stations that eliminate parasites. You will be free of parasites after using a Reconstructor. And returning to life

Managing Ether

Ether stays with you between cycles. You can spend ether in several ways. The Cthonos, which unlocks artifacts and items. A Reconstructor, which sets a respawn point—an Obolite Repository, which converts ether into Obolite for purchases.

You may also cleanse malignant items with ether, but the exchange often provides limited value in Returnal.

Choosing Your Weapon

You discover various weapon types during your journey. You always start with a handgun, but later find other weapons. Weapon proficiency determines how strong future drops are. Proficiency increases through weapon use or calibrators.

Each new biome grants a proficiency boost, so weapons found there are stronger than the ones you carried in. Even so, using a gun you understand can lead to better outcomes than switching to one that disrupts your rhythm. Select weapons that fit how you play and keep them through the cycle.

During early cycles, test each weapon you find. Learn which ones help you stay in control during encounters and boss fights, such as those against Phrike or Ixion in Returnal.
