AMD Ryzen 9950X3D2 vs. 9850X3D: Latest Leaks Revealed Performance

The IT world is buzzing with rumors again, this time regarding AMD's possible plan to double the power of its X3D processors. People are buzzing with excitement about what could be AMD's most ambitious desktop CPU ever, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, which is said to have two V-Cache CCDs.

If true, this could mean a significant leap in cache-heavy workloads, gaming, and overall computational power—bringing a whole new meaning to "more power."

Rumored Ryzen 9950X3D2 and Ryzen 7 9850X3D

According to sources, two CPUs are allegedly in development: the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 and the Ryzen 7 9850X3D. It is reported that the 9950X3D2 has a TDP of 200W, 16 cores, 32 threads, and a huge 192MB of L3 cache. The base clock speed is scheduled to be 4.3GHz and the boost clock speed is expected to be 5.66GHz. The Ryzen 7 9850X3D, on the other hand, is said to have 8 cores, 16 threads, a 120W TDP, and 96MB of L3 cache. Its boost and base frequencies are 5.6GHz and 4.7GHz, respectively.

the 9950X3D2 offers a 48 MB increase in cache to 192MB due to the additional V-Cache. Although it slightly reduces clock frequencies, we can likely correct that through PBO tuning. On the other hand, the 9850X3D delivers a 400MHz frequency increase, making it a more premium chip for users focused primarily on gaming.

The Possibility of Market Segmentation

If AMD decides to release these CPUs, we would expect some form of market segmentation. It's unlikely that the 9800X3D would be completely replaced. Instead, AMD could offer several variants based on yields and binning, allowing for a wider range of pricing and performance tiers.

However, the big question remains: are these CPUs real? Some sources, like Ruby Rapids at IT Home, believe the rumor has credibility but aren't entirely certain. Others, such as Lmus—known for creating Ryzen software tools—state that AMD currently has no plans for these processors and that the next major project is "Kraken." They argue that such a chip would not provide a substantial performance advantage in typical user tasks or gaming.

Insights from Testing and Sources

From our previous testing with the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, we've found that AMD's software does an impressive job managing process allocation. Games, for example, are now efficiently pinned to the X3D-enabled CCD. At the same time, other background applications or heavy tasks are directed to the standard CCD. 

During shader compilation in certain games, we observed that extra threads perform admirably in reducing stutter, suggesting that AMD's scheduling has become far more optimized.

Some sources have hinted that the dual V-Cache design might be intended for HPC or EPYC-class workloads, with consumer use planned later. Others have mentioned that it could still appear under the Ryzen brand if demand is high enough. Given the early nature of this leak, it's too soon to know for certain.

What It Could Mean for Performance and Pricing

If the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 were to launch, we'd expect a noticeable performance gain in tasks that benefit from large L3 caches—such as video editing, simulation workloads, and perhaps certain types of AI computations. For gaming, however, the benefit might be smaller. Games tend to rely on single CCD configurations for optimal latency, so while total cache would increase, the overall impact might vary depending on how well titles are optimized for multi-CCD architectures.

Pricing would also be a major consideration. A dual-V-Cache CPU would likely carry a premium, potentially putting it above the standard 9950X3D. Given AMD's current market strategy, it's plausible that they would maintain both models for distinct user segments—gamers and content creators alike.

Intel's Competitive Moves

Intel is still working on its Xe3 architecture, even though there are speculations about AMD. Recent tests reveal that the new Xe3P microarchitecture, which has 12 XE cores, is about 92% quicker than the old Xe2 cores while running OpenCL applications. This fits with Intel's goals to boost performance per watt and make things more efficient.

The GPU can handle up to 160GB of LPDDR5X memory, which shows that it was designed to be used in both data-heavy and high-performance computing workloads.

Future of GPU Competition

We've been closely monitoring Intel's roadmap. Despite delays in announcing high-end Battle Mage GPUs, there's clear evidence from shipping manifests that development continues. Intel has reaffirmed its commitment to discrete GPUs, even as it collaborates with Nvidia. Celestial GPUs for gaming are reportedly still in development, with Intel planning to further strengthen its GPU ecosystem.

Meanwhile, AMD seems focused on RDNA 5 after reportedly shelving higher-end RDNA 4 variants. With Nvidia preparing its RTX 50 Super lineup early next year, competition in the GPU market is heating up once again. If AMD can pair its next-gen CPUs with efficient, high-performance GPUs, the company could be well-positioned to capture both ends of the performance spectrum.

Looking Ahead

If AMD really does make a dual V-Cache Ryzen CPU, that might be a big step forward for desktop computers. It's not clear if this is a short-term fix before Zen 6 or a long-term product line. In any case, we're entering a fascinating time when both AMD and Intel are trying out novel efficiency designs and architectures that use a lot of cache.
