At launch, Intel’s Core Ultra 7 265K carried an MSRP of $400, though street prices briefly trended about $10 higher. Ryzen 7 7800X3D has seen price fluctuations—sometimes dipping just under $480—and the new Ryzen 7 9800X3D debuted at an MSRP of $479. 

On Intel’s side, adopting the Core Ultra platform requires a new Z890 motherboard and DDR5 RAM, whereas AM5 users can choose from X870, X870E, X670, X670E, B650, or B650E boards (all compatible with a BIOS update). 

Comparing motherboards narrows the platform cost delta, but you’ll still want to weigh motherboard and memory upgrades when budgeting your build.

What’s New with Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Built on AMD’s Zen 5 architecture, Ryzen 7 9800X3D offers an 8‑core, 16‑thread design with higher base clocks than both 9700X and 7800X3D, while retaining a 120 W TDP. Instead of stacking its extra L3 cache atop the cores, AMD relocated the 3D V‑cache beneath the core complex die.

That flip improves thermal contact between cores, cache, and the integrated heat spreader, allowing cores to run cooler and faster without throttling cache performance. 

Compared with its predecessor, 9800X3D boasts a 0.9 GHz higher base clock and reaches nearly the same max boost clock, albeit at slightly increased power.

Productivity Benchmarks

In Cinebench, 9800X3D outpaced 7800X3D by 27% in multi‑core runs and led Core Ultra 7 265K by roughly 28% in single‑core tests. However, it trailed 265K in raw multi‑core throughput. 

Under load, 9800X3D averaged about 147 W at 80 °C, 3 °C hotter than 7800X3D, while 265K drew 179 W at 73 °C. Performance‑per‑watt (Cinebench score divided by wattage) gave 9800X3D around 156 points/W, below both 7800X3D’s 211 points/W and 265K’s 193 points/W.

Real‑world PugetBench tests in Adobe Premiere and Photoshop initially showed 9800X3D leading 265K by 8% and 39% respectively; a subsequent microcode update narrowed Photoshop’s gap to 24% and flipped Premiere to favor 265K by 11%. Those shifts highlight how post‑launch updates can significantly alter performance profiles.

Gaming Benchmarks

At 1080p, 9800X3D delivered on average a 10% uplift over 7800X3D, with standout improvements in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Fortnite, and Baldur’s Gate 3.

265K trailed 9800X3D by 22% at this resolution. At 1440p, the gap between the two X3D chips narrowed, and 265K fell about 19% behind. 

In 4K gaming, 9800X3D still led 7800X3D by roughly 9% on average, with 265K some 13% back. Thermal behavior favored 9800X3D as well, averaging 50 °C during gaming—10 °C cooler than 7800X3D and just 3 °C warmer than 265K—while pulling about 59 W, similar to a Core Ultra 7 at load.

Overall Recommendation

If gaming is your top priority, Ryzen 7 9800X3D currently delivers best‑in‑class frame rates across popular titles, plus credible gains in creative workloads.

For those on older platforms, it opens an AM5 upgrade path; for existing AM5 users, it offers a solid performance boost over 7800X3D, though 7–10% gaming uplift and 11–15% creator uplift may not justify $500 if you already own a 7800X3D. 

Alternatively, investing that budget in a higher‑tier GPU (for example, RTX 4070) could yield greater system‑level gains in gaming.

Intel’s Core Ultra 7 265K still leads in heavily multi‑threaded tasks and can further improve via firmware and OS updates. Both 265K and 9800X3D run cool enough for small‑form‑factor builds, offering flexibility for different use cases. 

Ultimately, choose the processor that aligns with your workload priorities—higher frame rates in competitive games or faster video and photo editing renders—and the upgrade path that makes the most financial sense for your rig.
