With a good story, romance has been in the spotlight in many single-player games. It doesn't matter the genre; romance and its more explicit facets are often sought by many gamers. It is no secret that adult games are a wildly popular genre, with many such games released each year. Most of these games are unfinished messes or just badly designed to the point where they end up being a certain kind of content with an added step attached to it.
That being said, some games are actually really good or passable enough to be enjoyable. There are also those that are just great games, regardless of the adult content tag attached to them.
Note that the games and topics being discussed are sexual and explicit, and you must be 18 years or older to play them. With that out of the way, let us look at the top adult games of 2024 on Steam.
Summer Clover
As the title of the game might suggest, Summer Clover lets you experience a summer like never before as you jump into this visual novel that borrows elements from RPGs and Strategy games. Summer Clover lets you fill in the shoes of someone who is a million dollars in debt and suddenly gets an opportunity to become the housekeeper of three sisters, thanks to your trusty supervisor. The game's story is surprisingly well written, with likable characters that you slowly get attached to, and the player character is often funny, poking holes at anime and harem tropes.
The plot is not the only selling point, as Summer Clover is also extremely easy to play and lets you control the pace, giving you time to enjoy the story… among other things. The game is also large, with just about 18 hours of content and nothing boring. No, the gameplay is seemingly fun and addictive with dating sim and time management involved.
The game has no downsides other than its little replay value. There are also no real choices between the characters, at least not choices that matter. Despite this, with its cute art style and high-quality animations, it is one of the top adult games of 2024.
Sinners Landing
Card battles and dungeon crawlers are no new innovations in the adult genre, and they are the same developers who published Paradise Lust. In Sinners Landing, you explore dungeons, hunt monsters, get loot… and women. A sudden turn of events leads the player character, Tristan Lamprey, to be transported to a small mountain village in the middle of nowhere. Created by the same folks that brought you Paradise Lust in Sinners Landing, you will move around a map and click on stuff or, sometimes, people.
This will initiate conversations or start little puzzles. The puzzles themselves are fun little distractions, while the conversations, like in Paradise Lust, are funny, witty, and engaging. This extends to the world, which feels alive and lived in. The characters are unique and have their own presence instead of similar caricatures.
The gameplay is essentially like a dungeon crawler centered around card-style battles. These cards are moves your character learns and uses to kill monsters. Progressing through the story strengthens your character and unlocks newer, stronger cards. While a bit drawn out, the gameplay is fun and simple, giving you time to appreciate the story and art style, which is also stunning.
AURA: Hentai Cards
AURA: Hentai Cards is a deck-building card game that is oriented towards. With a rather simple story, AURA: Hentai Cards isn't the most spectacular thing. It is, again, simple, with easy-to-learn mechanics and gameplay. With a captivating art style combined with decent writing, the game has seen a lot of support from the developer.
With an array of DLCs that add various forms of content to the game, AURA: Hentai Cards will keep you engaged for a while. The cast itself is interesting, to say the least, although some are more poorly made than others. The success of the base game led the developers to publish three DLCs, Jelly Christmas, Revenge of the Fox Spirit, and The Dark Sea, all of which are fun to play.
Some DLCs, however, have a few glitches, and the game sometimes skips battles and dialogue. This can make the experience very disjointed, as you miss out on many parts of the story. At higher difficulty, the game can be surprisingly challenging. Added to that, the visuals, like many games on this list, are impressive. Despite its flaws, with the promise of more content, AURA: Hentai Cards is pretty worth it.
8th Heaven
It's a very silly little point-and-click adventure game where you have recently died and been reborn on a paradise island. With a mix of 3D environment and 2D art, 8th Heaven offers a unique experience with lovable characters and a fun story in the thread of a slice-of-life anime. With somewhat complex gameplay and little quests, the game has lots to offer while still being in early access.
It is a peaceful and cute game that has a unique art style and a plot that leaves you wondering what is going to happen, even though there's not much of it yet. The game, however, lacks many elements and is, as of now, unfinished, and the mini-games, while fun, can leave you confused and dazed about what to do.
Last Hope
Last Hope is a 3D adult visual novel-type adventure game set in a sci-fi world. As the newest spaceship crew member tasked to terraform other planets, you are obviously the most qualified to save the day. As you find out that you're the only male in the crew, you go around introducing yourself to the three other crewmates. Things take a turn for the worse as your ship malfunctions and gets stranded; it is your job to try to fix it.
Last Hope lets you engage in a dating sim in space, with your task ultimately being fixing the ship. You also build up your relationship with the other characters and woo them in many different ways. The game offers you quite a bit of full or partially animated content. All that with decent dialogue and graphics. That being said, there are some bugs and janky animation here and there, but it doesn't detract from the experience.
Morningstar: Book of the Fallen
Another 3D visual novel, this time set in an urban fantasy. You become roped into an eternal fight between good and evil, or rather, light and day, as you fight supernatural entities as a mixed martial artist. The game offers a semi-open world that you can move around in. You customize your character and engage in turn-based combat with gameplay reminiscent of Huniepop.
You have to explore, build your relationship with a cast of characters, and romance them. The game has decent graphics and animations and a great story. The game also features a unique combat system that you can ultimately skip for the story.
With Eyes Closed - Season 1
A third 3D visual novel, With Eyes Closed – Season 1, offers great graphics wrapped with a great story. You play as an amnesiac in the middle of what looks like a horror story. The game is a thriller with over 7 hours of gameplay. The game also offers a branching storyline where you can make choices that lead to varying results. With advanced models, the game looks rather good for a 3D adult game.
The game's pull is its story, offering a thrilling narrative with engaging characters and an intricate and complex web of storylines. With Eyes Closed—Season 1 offers a unique blend of visual novel experiences, all with adult content and themes.
A Town Uncovered
Another visual novel that transports you to a parallel town with bizarre norms and rules. You meet and romance a cast of over 40 characters and explore the town while building relations with the cast and engaging in certain activities. Some of these interactions require skill checks, giving you unique activities that are small mini-games to increase your skills. Together with earning money, the game can be a little grindy at times.
The game is in early access, and it shows. It might have decent writing, but some of the interactions feel forced and shallow, making you think you skipped several steps or forgot to do something. The game has its own OST with a few tracks that provide a neat atmosphere with its unique art style. For what it's worth, it is already a large game with a lot of content put into it and, supposedly, a lot more to come.
Opportunity: A Sugar Baby Story
This cute visual novel offers a heartfelt story about a single mother and her two children. She meets an old friend and becomes extremely close with them. The game offers plenty of fun interactions, nuanced humor, and many different real-life themes. Surprisingly, it also portrays the duties of a parent and the downsides of parenthood well.
The game lacks other gameplay elements and real choices, as there are dialogue options that don't actually do anything. But paired with a relatively neat cast and interesting main characters, it will leave you feeling wholesome and happy.
Leaving DNA
It is a 3D adult visual novel that offers more of a story than explicit elements. You play as an idealistic Assistant District Attorney who is well-respected in his field, but this has left him without a real family.
You start to study a mysterious case related to your deceased father, which opens the door to starting new relationships with new people. In the game, you explore a finely woven story, engaging with four distinct characters who grapple with various themes and plot points.
You get to be at the forefront of this journey of transformation, transforming your character through different choices and decisions. This game deals with very heavy topics and gives you a very deep story. The game also immerses you with its sound design and rendering, with each element fitting the current part of the story and mood.
MILF's Plaza
It is a unique visual novel with a neat art style. There's a lot of these here, isn't there? In this one, you are in the shoes of an ambitious adventurer with much to achieve. You engage with many characters as you go deeper into the story and freely interact with many of them. The game offers fun and short mini-games as well as a survival mode.
The survival mode can be tricky, with you having to eat, sleep, and rest. You essentially play in a sandbox and do mostly whatever you want. The game isn't really linear, but you can go about it in any sequence you like. The story is also not very engaging, albeit offering witty jokes with a slice of self-depreciating humor.
