Total War: WARHAMMER III Guide | Best Army Compositions
The best army compositions to win every battle in Total War: WARHAMMER III.

The main protagonists of the setting, the Empire, stand as a bastion of humanity and the race that is most played in Total War: WARHAMMER III. They have a very balanced faction with access to many different kinds of units. Faith, Steel, and Gunpowder certainly make the Empire great, and this guide will go over the Empire unit roster and the best compositions from that roster.
The Empire is pretty much a jack-of-all-trades faction, relying on a good composition, so you can’t always win with a line of the best units available. There are, of course, some very notable exceptions. With the Thrones of Decay DLC, the Empire also gets a bunch of new toys to play with, suddenly making them extremely good on the ranged side of things.
Note that these are cases for single-player, where things like faction bonuses, tech, recruitment cost, and recruitment time play a role.
Generalist Army
The Generalist Army is basically your bread and butter and what you will have for most of your armies, especially in the mid-game. Now, these armies can have a decent chunk of variety. However, they are usually composed of a frontline of Spearmen, usually the ones with shields, as they are the most cost-effective lineholders.
You’ll have a second line of missile infantry, consisting of 4-6 units of crossbows, which you later transition into hand gunners or Ironsides. You might also find yourself with some long rifles, but generally, hand gunners and Ironsides are better.
You are better off having around three heroes. These include a warrior priest, a spellcaster, usually the lore of light, to trap enemies, and finally, an engineer to buff ranged and artillery units.
Speaking of which, you also want at least 3-4 artillery units. The end goal here is to have 4 Hellstorm Rocket Batteries, but when you are starting off, any other one is fine. An alternative to this is basically replacing the frontline with steam tanks.
To lead your armies, the best bet is the master engineer for the buffs; however, if you want a really strong frontline and a linchpin, you can also use the Empire Generals.
Doomstacks
Now, half of that is thrown out the window when it comes to Doomstacks. Doomstacks are basically the name for armies that are entirely or mostly composed of a single unit. The most common doomstack for the Empire is that of Landships and Steam Tanks.
They are very strong and can often just auto-resolve conflicts. In battle, they are also really good and can stand up to most enemy armies. Usually, you would also want 1-2 Lore of Life Casters and a Master Engineer along with them to get a better value.
