Upcoming Pokémon games rumors and what players might expect from the franchise.
Opinion by Sabi on Dec 07, 2024
Among the most popular franchises in the world—and Nintendo's—the Pokémon series has had a fantastic run on the Switch. Now that we know what to expect from the series after Legends: Arceus, we can discuss what's to come in the Pokémon games.
Detailed news and rumors about upcoming Pokémon games.
Pokémon Legends Z-A
Starting with the previously stated Pokémon Legends: Z, let's get right into it. I was ecstatic to see this game announced in the latest Pokémon Presents! In addition to learning that we will be returning to Kalos, we also received assurance that the Legends series will continue beyond Legends: Arceus.
Gen 7 did include some Zygarde tales, but they were uncomfortable and felt like a rehash of a plot that belonged in Gen 6. So, I'm looking forward to getting Legend Z-A, including Zygarde and more.
Based on the unveiling trailer, Lumiose City will serve as the setting for this game. Before, the hardware on the 3DS limited what we could see, but now it's all here! Coming into next year, it will be among my most anticipated games.
Pokémon Generation 10
Regarding Generation 10, I've truly enjoyed Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. In my opinion, aside from the performance issues, it stands out as one of the finest mainline Pokémon games we've experienced in quite a while. Generation 10 certainly has high expectations to meet.
The Gen 10 games will likely be released solely on the Switch 2. With the hardware upgrade, a significant enhancement in performance and graphics is anticipated. However, beyond the performance issues, I would like to share my actual wish list for what I hope to see in these games.
Finally, when might we expect the release of the Generation 10 games? I believe there will likely be a Switch 2 exclusive, and I anticipate a release in 2027. With Legends: Z set for release in 2025, it is essential to provide Game Freak with this additional time, particularly in light of the challenges faced by Scarlet and Violet. Fans of Pokémon around the globe desire high-quality games that are free from performance problems. I believe this additional time will enable Game Freak to provide an exceptional experience.
Pokémon Black and White Remake
Black and White represent the height of storytelling in the Pokémon series. They explore profound themes such as truth, ideals, and the ethics of Pokémon battles—positioning themselves as a leading contender in the series.
Let's discuss remakes as a whole. Pokémon has a strong history of successful remakes—up until Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. At the time, Game Freak was focused on developing Legends: Arceus, so the responsibility for BDSP was transferred to ILCA, with Game Freak providing only consultation for the project. The outcome? A game that seemed excessively reminiscent of the original Diamond and Pearl, which, to be fair, were not flawless games to start with. Many fans' affection for Sinnoh originates from Platinum, yet BDSP overlooked Platinum completely and adhered too closely to the original content of Diamond and Pearl.
I hope that Game Freak considers both Black and White and Black and White 2, combining the narratives and introducing new features to craft the ultimate Unova experience.
Pokémon Lets Go Jhoto
The concept of Let's Go Johto has been circulating for years. At one point, numerous fans speculated that it was being hinted at, particularly when Johto Pokémon were visible in the background during a Pokémon Presents. A Let's Go title set in Johto could be pretty captivating, particularly considering Johto's distinctive aspect: the opportunity to transition into Kanto. Given that the developers possess the assets for Kanto from Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee, it could be relatively simple to integrate a dual-region experience.
Nonetheless, in 2024, the chances of a Let's Go Johto appear to be low. The release of Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee coincided perfectly with the height of Pokémon GO's popularity, acting as an ideal gateway for casual players transitioning to the mainline games.
Consider it a singular experiment instead of an ongoing series of kin to the Legends titles. Nonetheless, it's enjoyable to contemplate the possibilities of Let's Go Johto, as it's a game that many fans have longed to experience.
Pokémon Retro Games on Nintendo Switch Online
The conversation surrounding Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) and the possibility of incorporating retro Pokémon games into the service. Recently, the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon was added to the Game Boy Advance (GBA) Online service, marking a significant achievement for retro Pokémon enthusiasts.
Many individuals are enthusiastic about experiencing these classic titles on contemporary hardware, particularly given the difficulty in locating authentic Game Boy systems and cartridges. A few years back, there were whispers about Nintendo potentially launching a bundle of classic GBA Pokémon titles for the Switch, but that never came to fruition.
It is hoped that NSO will soon incorporate these classic titles, enabling fans to experience the nostalgia of the early Pokémon games while also looking ahead to the series' future.
In the end, all that is said is that the future of the Pokémon Franchise is bright, and they have a lot to uncover in the upcoming years.
