What better way to celebrate the holiday season than with some of our favourite Frosty Fighting Characters the genre has threw our way over the years.
The Ice Climbers - Super Smash Bros.
Ice Climber first appeared on consoles back in 1985, shortly after the arcade release of the Nintendo vs. series in which the game was based. It wasn’t until Super Smash Bros. Melee came out sixteen years later that the main character Popo would come to prominence and feature as a fully-fledged fighter, along with a partner by the name of Nana. Although they fight together, players are only able to control one at a time while the other mimics each move. The drafty duo have now since become cult icons amongst fans and considered one of the strongest opponents if used correctly, with their intricate grabs able to kill opponents without them landing a single hit.
Glacius - Killer Instinct
Killer Instinct is considered a major success in the long list of creations developed by legendary game company Rare. Glacius is one of more recognisable characters from the game, with an intriguing and workable backstory deserved of its own game, or at least featured in a future title where we could see some progression. An alien captured and forced to play in a tournament to the death, pitted against the fire spirit Cinder in a true battle of fire and ice, in which he came out victorious, albeit bittersweet. He is best known for his liquidation attack where he morphs his body into a pool of water, moves across the screen, and then precedes to uppercut his opponent.
Sub-Zero - Mortal Kombat
Not just one of the most recognisable fighters in the Mortal Kombat universe, but also one of the most recognisable figures throughout video game history. Sub-Zero was originally just a blue palette swap of Scorpion, one of the games main protagonists, but soon gained a large fan following and appreciation and thus resulted in a rich backstory being created – paving way for a second playable version of the character, depicted as his younger brother. As well as his many varying ice attacks he also boasts one of the most gruesome fatalities among the cast known as “Spine Rip” which is that horrific it has been banned from certain releases.
Bad Mr. Frosty – ClayFighter
While the ClayFighter games aren’t the best of their genre… well, actually they’re not good full stop… terrible in fact… there’s something about the games main fighter Bad Mr. Frosty that you can’t help but love, or maybe love to hate. He’s a big bad parody of Frosty the Snowman, think what you would get if something went wrong in the manufacturing process of Frosty toys and you wouldn’t be far wrong. His attacks are cheap and his one-liners cringe-worthy, growling "Call me Daddy!" at opponents. His only redeeming quality is that he is voice acted by Jim Cummings, who brought us characters from Aladdin, Winnie the Pooh and The Loon King no less.
Iceman - Marvel vs. Capcom
Wrapping up our icy character countdown is Iceman from the X-Men and Marvel vs. Capcom series. Arguably his best ability from the fighting series is the fact he cannot take any chip damage from the projectiles of opponents, which is a pretty strong trait to possess. He also has some pretty powerful special attacks including, Ice Beam, Avalanche and Ice Fist, and a hyper move called Arctic Attack whereby he shoots out multiple ice pellets from his chest that can be devastating at close range, but less so the further away it gets. Overall, he is a middle of the range fighter and if placed in the right hands can do some real damage to any that come up against him.
