Alongside a new trailer starring Nightwing, new information about the scale of Gotham Knights has been revealed. Speaking to Game Informer about their upcoming superhero game, executive producer Fleur Marty and game director Geoff Ellenor of Warner Brothers. Games Montreal told the site that their version of Gotham City "feels like a big place".
Gotham City is synonymous with the Batman mythos and has played an important role in many of the caped crusader's video game outings. The city received its most expansive and detailed appearance to date in Rocksteady Studios' Batman: Arkham series with Batman: Arkham Knights' open-world Gotham a reported five times larger than its predecessor Arkham City.
While Geoff Ellenor has not "put one map over the other" and compared Gotham Knights' Gotham City to previous incarnations, he modestly acknowledges that "it's pretty big... our Gotham is a big place". Big enough that Warner Bros. Games have provided players with three modes of traversal, including the Batcycle, which Fleur Marty calls "the long-range mode of transportation."
"For sure it's the biggest version of Gotham that has been represented in video games." Fleur Marty claims. Players will have to use character-specific modes of traversal, such as Nightwing's glider, to get around a Gotham City that "has a lot of layers" and, with their trusty grappling hook, players will be able to explore a game world interested in "density and verticality".
If they deliver Warner Brothers. Games Montreal could provide gamers with a large, rich city to run around and fight crime in, on par with what fans have experienced before. But to do this the Gotham City of Gotham Knights will, at the very least, need to match its predecessors in its size, density, and comic book references.
Gotham Knights will release on the 25th of October on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC.
