One of the most successful video games with a female protagonist, Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider series, has left an indelible impression on players and the gaming world at large. Many will certainly rank Lara Croft as the most beloved female protagonist, and I'm definitely among them. Crystal Dynamics' showcase of Lara Croft's upcoming game more than made up for my disillusionment with the underwhelming Tomb Raider I–III Remastered.
So here's the good news for the Tomb Raider Survivor trilogy fans. It has been announced that Crystal Dynamics will create a new installment in the series, and Amazon Games will handle publishing. Crystal Dynamics has stated that Lara's upcoming adventures would merge the timeframes of the Tomb Raider series built by Core Design with Lara's Survivor era.
Not too long ago, we witnessed Lara in Call of Duty and a new look of her wearing a costume reminiscent of her original design—the kind she wore after the Survivor trilogy (Tomb Raider 2013, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider)—which lends to the belief that this is ultimately her future looks. And to validate it, Crystal Dynamics, the developers of the Tomb Raider Series, have just glimpsed the upcoming Lara Croft game on her birthday.
If you're up for a little glyph puzzle, you can find Lara's new artwork on the TombRaider website. However, it depicts Lara Croft brandishing two pistols while wearing an edgy tank top and shorts. Forget about bows and arrows, Lara of the future. Although the artwork appears to be for Lara after Shadow of the Tomb Raider, it is evident that she is wearing a jade pendant necklace, which was a keepsake from her first ancient discovery in the Survivor games.
A little older and more powerful-looking Lara than in the previous three Tomb Raider games (2013, 2015, and 2018) is also present. Reminiscing her encounter with T-Rex in the first Tomb Raider game, the conclusion of the final installment of that trilogy hinted at future adventures that would take Lara back to Egypt.
The most recent Tomb Raider game, I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft, published by Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics, should have been better, but that has only served to increase the anticipation of the series' loyal followers for the upcoming installment. Curiously, some reviewers and returning players of the beloved game have already voiced their approval of leaving things alone.
Instead of blaming or taking something away from the game, Crystal Dynamics appears to have done the right thing by being cautious about their upcoming Tomb Raider game. As far as the above artwork goes, this is a very well-designed character, and Lara looks terrific in them. Crystal Dynamics has been tight-lipped regarding the upcoming Tomb Raider but has revealed that Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5 is powering its development.
The Tomb Raider survival games have all been released within a span of three years of the initial game. That being the case, the new Tomb Raider game should be out this year. The lack of further updates on this series is inadequate, but we can only wait for the next Tomb Raider game to be released in 2024. We really wanted this game yesterday and are curious about when to expect an announcement trailer.
