Activision and Bungie's 10-Year Deal Ends, Bungie Acquires Full Rights to Destiny

Bungie owns Destiny now

In a shocking turn of events, Bungie and Activision have split as of today. With the Destiny IP going to Bungie in the separation but all DLC plans for Destiny 2 remaining unchanged.

The announcement comes via a blog post on Bungie’s website, alongside a joint statement from the two companies. The statement from Activision and Bungie is as follows:

“Today, we’re announcing plans for Bungie to assume full publishing rights and responsibilities for the Destiny franchise. Going forward, Bungie will own and develop the franchise, and Activision will increase its focus on owned IP and other projects. Activision and Bungie are committed to a seamless transition for the Destiny franchise and will continue to work closely together during the transition on behalf of the community of Destiny players around the world.”

The Destiny franchise was the start of a 10-year deal between Activision and Bungie on the studio's next big IP after Halo but since the launch of the series, the IP hasn't done too well. While significant copies have been sold the game's audiences have shrunk due to lackluster communicating between fans and Bungie, nefarious practices such as limiting experience gained without telling fans, and heavy monetization practices. Activision stated about Destiny 2 performance has been less than expected and decided to double down on monetization. This, of course, angered fans who decided to leave for other more appealing live-service titles and could be the reason that Activision and Bungie decided to split, but that's my guess.

Destiny 2 is now available for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
