It is now official. There will be a live-action adaptation of 2018’s God of War, and maybe even an adaptation of God of War Ragnarök after that, but that is yet to be seen. This series will, effectively, tell the story of the 2018 reboot, so it will be set in the Norse side of Kratos’s life rather than earlier Greek portions of it that left the world decimated in his wake.

This news has been elaborated on by Variety, in which we learned that this will be a collaborative effort between Prime Video, Sony Pictures Television, and PlayStation Productions. It also has Cory Barlog, director of the 2018 reboot, as an executive producer. This means that there will, at least, be someone from the games to keep everything on track.

This series will feature Rafe Judkins as showrunner and executive producer. He has previously been the developer and showrunner on Amazon’s adaptation of The Wheel of Time. In addition, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, who have worked on Iron Man and Children of Men, have joined the writing team. There is a good deal of nerd-oriented talent on display here, so hopefully they manage to make something good out of this.

Furthermore, Vernon Sanders, the head of global television at Amazon Studios, stated: “The God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling.” Let’s pray this turns out to be true because the 2018 God of War game has been critically acclaimed since release, and the same can be said of this year’s God of War Ragnarök, which even walked away with numerous awards at The Game Awards last week.

Prime Video and the folks who want to adapt this thing certainly have a tough job ahead of them. Let’s hope they can pull it off!
