Days Gone Remastered is stepping up its marketing as its release date approaches. The latest addition is a new trailer that shows off Horde Assault Mode, a major addition to the game. As first reported by Push Square, the trailer shows that this fan-favorite feature from the PS4 version is not only coming back on PS5 but also being greatly expanded and turned into a full-fledged game mode.
The zombie horde system in Days Gone on PS4 was one of the game's best technical features. Even though the game was made for old hardware, it was still able to make hundreds of Freakers (the game's zombie-like enemies) swarm around the main character, Deacon St. John. These overwhelming, changing horde battles became one of the most famous parts of the game, even among people who didn't really like the rest of it.
With Days Gone Remastered for PS5, Bend Studio is making this technology even better. The new trailer says that Horde Assault Mode is meant to be played on its own and makes the most of the PS5's faster processing power. The Freaker hordes are bigger and stronger than ever, pushing both the player and the system to their limits.
In this new mode, players can pick from a list of characters, some of which look like new characters that weren't in the main campaign, and fight in horde battles that get harder as the level of difficulty goes up. For as long as you stay alive, the horde gets stronger. In each run, players try to stay alive as long as they can while also getting the highest score.
Horde Assault Mode adds a progression system where players can gain levels, improve their gear, and unlock modifiers that change the way the game is played in new ways. You can get powerful bonuses from some of these modifiers, but they also have downsides. For example, the trailer shows that Exploding Freakers, enemies that go off when they die, could be added. This modifier can help get rid of big groups of players quickly, but it also lowers your final score by 15%. This adds a strategic risk-reward element to the game.
In addition to survival and scoring, the mode offers rewards that depend on how well you do, which makes players want to try out different builds and modifiers. There also looks to be a competitive side, most likely in the form of leaderboards or challenges that encourage players to get high scores. The trailer didn't say for sure if Horde Assault Mode will have online features or co-op play, but the way it's set up makes it look like replayability and performance will be very important.
Days Gone Remastered comes out on April 25, 2025. It can be bought by itself or as a $10 upgrade for people who already have the game, whether on disc or in their heads. This is in line with Sony's recent trend of making it easy and cheap for PS4 games to be upgraded to newer hardware. The remaster will also include standard improvements like faster load times, better graphics, support for DualSense, and a higher framerate. But this Horde Assault Mode is what most interests fans and curious newcomers.
Bend Studio turned one of the best parts of the original game into a separate mode, showing that they knew what made Days Gone special. The original release got mixed reviews, but the horde mechanics were praised for being big and intense. That might get people interested in the game again if it's turned into a focused survival experience with modern features like modifiers, gear upgrades, and character progression.
Because it uses the PS5's power and clearly tries to change things around what worked best, Days Gone Remastered looks like it will be more than just a visual upgrade. In particular, Horde Assault Mode could become a highlight feature that lives up to the game's original promise in a bigger and better way.
