At a recent EA business meeting, while Battlefield and Star Wars Jedi fans received promising updates about their favorite franchises, fans of The Sims had their hopes dashed.
Despite months of speculation, EA officially confirmed that The Sims 5 is not part of their current plans. Instead, the company remains committed to supporting The Sims 4 and working on other things, such as Project Rene.
Kate Gorman, EA Vice President and General Manager of The Sims franchise, emphasized that the company focuses on expanding their existing universe rather than starting fresh with a new numbered entry. She referred to this shift as a "new era" for the franchise, stressing that EA doesn't want to reset players' progress but aims to innovate within The Sims 4 instead.
This decision may not come as a complete surprise, as all previous Sims sequels essentially replaced their predecessors. However, Gorman made it clear that EA is taking a different approach this time, intent on continuing to support the game with more DLC and updates, including the newly teased Life and Death expansion pack.
The Sims 4, which boasts over 80 million lifetime players, will continue to receive more content "than ever," as EA hopes to keep the title evolving.
Interestingly, former EA staff have claimed that The Sims 5 was once in active development before being canceled, with the project reportedly shut down no later than early 2024. Additionally, job listings have surfaced, hinting at another game under the codename Project Dolores. While its connection to the canceled Sims 5 is unclear, it shows that EA is actively working on something new.
As EA pivots towards this new strategy, many cozy gamers are eyeing upcoming alternatives like InZOI. By comparing gameplay showcases, InZOI seems to run circles around The Sims 4, based on our initial impressions so far. The models look better detailed, and you seem to have more control over character relationships. You can also generate items in the game with the help of AI.
All that seems great, but it is undeniable that there will be those who crave more of that “Sims” flavor in the life sim genre, and for that, they will have to keep playing The Sims 4, as EA seems to have placed all their eggs into this one basket.
