GTA 6 is Expected to Launch at 30 FPS as Rockstar Focuses on its Massive World

A former Rockstar technical director suggests the game’s scale and visual detail could make higher frame rates difficult at launch

One of the biggest conversations around GTA 6 right now is how well the game will actually run. Rockstar has revealed very little about performance so far, even though store pages have already started mentioning certain technical features.

For example, the PlayStation store listing confirms that GTA 6 will be PS5 Pro enhanced, meaning there will be improvements available on Sony’s more powerful console that will not be present on the base PS5. The problem is that Rockstar has not explained exactly what those upgrades will include.

The PS5 Pro enhancements could mean several different things.

The upgrades could include higher resolution, a more stable frame rate, improved visual quality, faster loading, or potentially better overall performance. Currently, players know the game will take advantage of the hardware, but they do not know the exact details. Many expected Rockstar to provide a deeper breakdown of what players can expect before pre-orders went live.

The biggest question surrounding the game has been whether it will run at 30 FPS or 60 FPS on current-generation consoles. For months, rumors have been circulating that GTA 6 may come with a 30 FPS cap, which has worried some players.

There are many questions about how a game coming in 2026 can be 30 FPS only when platforms like the PS5 Pro and XBOX Series X are built to handle demanding experiences. However, the scale of GTA 6 may be the reason Rockstar is making that choice.

A recent interview with a former Grand Theft Auto technical director has provided some new insight into the situation. The discussion focused on whether Rockstar will be able to deliver 60 FPS on consoles or whether players should expect a 30 FPS target instead.

The source is someone familiar with Rockstar’s development process, having formerly worked on titles like GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption. Because of that background, the comments have gained attention from fans trying to understand what performance might look like.

Kiwi Talks, a channel known for speaking with developers and industry figures, conducted the interview.

During the discussion, former Rockstar producer and technical director John Riccio discussed the challenges of maintaining high frame rates on current-generation hardware. His comments focused on the difficulty of balancing performance with the enormous scale and ambition Rockstar is aiming for with GTA 6

The reason is simply how detailed GTA 6 appears to be. From everything Rockstar has shown so far, the game aims to create one of the most alive and detailed open worlds ever seen in a video game. You have seen screenshots showing giant environments, busy beaches filled with NPCs, packed city streets, distant landscapes, changing weather, and countless interactive details.

With so many elements being processed at once, Rockstar has to make difficult choices. A higher frame rate could require the studio to reduce visual quality, lower object density, or remove some of the details that make the world feel alive. According to Riccio’s comments, Rockstar is more likely to prioritize graphical fidelity and the number of objects and NPCs in the world rather than pushing for the highest possible frame rate.

There have been rumors and retailer listings suggesting GTA 6 could eventually include both 30 FPS and 60 FPS modes on PS5 and XBOX Series X.

However, Rockstar has not officially confirmed those details yet. The studio also has a history of releasing console games at 30 FPS before adding higher frame rate options years later. That history is one reason many players believe a performance mode could arrive after launch.

The PS5 Pro may be the console most capable of reaching higher frame rates because of its extra power. With changes to resolution or graphical settings, a steady 60 FPS experience could be possible with the upgraded hardware. But, even with the resources Rockstar has at its disposal, GTA 6 is an extremely ambitious project.

Rockstar’s previous games also create an interesting situation because performance upgrades have often arrived later. After launch, titles like GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 received improved versions that offered better performance and graphics. A similar scenario could play out with GTA 6, especially considering the next-gen consoles are expected around 2027 or 2028.

This means players could see a future GTA 6 version with 60 FPS or higher frame rates on next-gen consoles. Rockstar could leverage those systems to get the best performance and visual quality. Meanwhile, current consoles could receive a performance mode that sacrifices some graphical settings to reach higher frame rates.

The PC version could become the place where players with powerful hardware push GTA 6 to its limits.

Those with high-end systems may be able to increase frame rates while keeping the game running at maximum visual settings. However, that release could still be far away, as Rockstar traditionally launches its PC versions after the console release. For now, console players are the ones waiting for official performance details.

These latest comments suggest that a 60 FPS launch for GTA 6 is now less likely than many fans had hoped. It would not be surprising if Rockstar chooses to lock the game at 30 FPS to protect the world density, visuals, and overall experience it is building.

There could still be situations where PS5 Pro performs better in less demanding areas, but the full performance picture remains unclear. Until Rockstar officially explains its plans, players must wait for more information. For now, any expectations about platform-specific improvements remain largely based on speculation rather than confirmed details.

For now, the information information is the most detailed insight available about GTA 6’s expected performance. Rockstar has yet to provide a complete breakdown of frame rates, resolution options, or console-specific features. When the studio finally reveals those details, it will likely answer many of the questions players have been debating.
