Insomniac's 10 Year Marvel Slate Spans Wolverine to X-Men

From Wolverine to Venom to Spider-Man 3 and eventually X-Men, here's the full picture of what Insomniac Games is reportedly planning next.

If you've been paying attention to the superhero gaming space lately, you already know Insomniac Games has become the studio to watch. Between the two Spider-Man games and the upcoming Wolverine release, Insomniac Games has quietly turned itself into one of the most trusted names in the genre.

But according to a growing pile of leaks, insider reports, and scattered official hints, what the studio is working on behind the scenes goes way beyond just one more Spider-Man sequel. If even half of this turns out to be true, Insomniac Games could be sitting on a Marvel gaming universe that stretches all the way into the PlayStation 6 generation.

Marvel's Wolverine: Wolverine bares claws in rain

You're looking at four major projects here.

Wolverine, a Venom game, Spider-Man 3, and eventually a full X-Men title. That's a lot to unpack, so let's start with what's closest to actually happening and work our way out from there. First up is Marvel's Wolverine, which is currently expected to land sometime in 2026.

This one's confirmed, so there's not much guessing involved, but the shape of the game itself is still worth talking about. You already know it's a third-person action game built around Logan's story, but Insomniac Games appears to be taking a different structural approach than it did with Spider-Man.

Instead of one sprawling open world, reports suggest you'll be moving through several semi-open areas instead, which actually tracks pretty well with Wolverine as a character. He's not exactly a guy who needs a whole city to swing across.

Beyond the moment-to-moment gameplay, there's also a real chance this game ties into the wider X-Men side of Marvel's universe. Expect multiple villains and other X-Men characters to show up in some form, and some of what happens here could end up setting the stage for whatever Insomniac Games eventually does with a full X-Men project down the line.

There's also talk of a sequel clause buried somewhere in Insomniac's agreement with Marvel.

If Wolverine sells well and the studio has a strong enough story left to tell, a second Wolverine game isn't off the table. Nothing's locked in, obviously, but it's worth keeping in mind. Next up is the Venom game, which has reportedly been targeting a 2027 release.

This is where things get a little messier. At one point, rumors were circulating that the Venom project had been scrapped entirely, especially after Insomniac Games went through some internal shakeups and the planned Spider-Man 2 DLC quietly disappeared. For a while there was basically radio silence, which understandably led people to assume the whole thing was dead.

But more recent word from those close to the studio suggests the project never actually died; it just got pushed back and possibly expanded into something bigger than originally planned. One theory floating around right now is that Venom could serve as a connective tissue project between Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, filling in story gaps rather than existing as a standalone side game.

There's also chatter about the game featuring up to three playable characters, which would be a pretty significant jump in scope if it holds up. On top of that, some of the material originally written for the canceled Carnage DLC may have found a new home inside this expanded Venom project.

That would actually make a lot of sense, since the Carnage storyline was already tightly wound into the symbiote plot from Spider-Man 2, and giving it room to breathe in a full game rather than squeezing it into add-on content sounds like the smarter move anyway.

There's also a genuinely interesting detail tied to the late Tony Todd.

Todd lent his voice to Venom in Spider-Man 2. Apparently only a small fraction of what he recorded actually made it into the final game, which means there could be a significant amount of unused dialogue sitting around. Some reports have pointed toward that leftover material touching on the Life Foundation storyline, including symbiotes like Lasher, Riot, and Agony.

None of this is confirmed by any official source, so take it as a rumor for now, but if Insomniac Games really did record that much extra material, it's not hard to imagine some of it eventually resurfacing. You might also see Yuri Watanabe play a bigger role here too, since her arc was already tied to the symbiote events in Spider-Man 2.

Giving her a larger part in a Venom-focused game, possibly even as a playable character, would fit the story pretty naturally. Then there's the big one: Spider-Man 3. Current estimates put this somewhere around 2028 or 2029, later than the 2027 window some earlier reports suggested.

That delay actually makes sense once you factor in Wolverine's 2026 release and whatever resources the Venom project is pulling. Spider-Man 3 is reportedly being treated as the true finale of this current trilogy, and the scope being described isn't small. Multiple villains, multiple playable characters, and a handful of storylines that have been building since the very first game are all supposedly in play.

Green Goblin is expected to be front and center.

Green Goblin might possibly be the main antagonist, but he's far from the only name being thrown around. Doctor Octopus could make a comeback, Carnage might still have unfinished business, and Venom himself could show up again depending on how that earlier game plays out.

Cindy Moon is also expected to transition into her Silk persona, and if her role in the story is as big as some reports suggest, there's a decent chance she becomes playable too. You'll also likely see Peter Parker step back into the spotlight.

After handing off more responsibility to Miles during Spider-Man 2, Peter has reportedly taken a step back from being the primary Spider-Man, but Spider-Man 3 sounds like the game where that shifts again. Miles, meanwhile, is expected to be noticeably more experienced by this point, having spent time protecting the city largely on his own.

If Venom really does act as a narrative bridge leading into Spider-Man 3, it wouldn't be surprising to see Eddie Brock's version of the character return as well, possibly even fighting alongside the heroes against Green Goblin or whoever ends up being the primary threat.

Post-launch content is another piece worth mentioning.

Spider-Man 2 originally had additional content planned that ultimately got canceled as Insomniac Games shifted focus elsewhere, and that decision didn't sit well with a lot of fans. Since Spider-Man 3 is shaping up to be the send-off for this whole trilogy, there's a real chance Insomniac Games goes all in on post-launch support this time, whether that means extra missions, new characters, or expanded side stories.

This is essentially their last shot to wrap up this version of the Spider-Man universe the right way, and it wouldn't be shocking if they treated it that way. Beyond all of that sits the X-Men game, which is reportedly where Insomniac Games is aiming to take things next. Internal planning for this project has apparently been in motion for a while, and reports suggest Insomniac's broader agreement with Marvel stretches well into the next decade.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Venom spreads wings on spire

This one's expected to be a PlayStation 6-era release, which lines up with a rumored 2030 target window. If that timeline holds, everything happening in Wolverine could essentially be laying groundwork for this much larger project.

Characters being floated for the X-Men game include Wolverine himself, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Mystique, and Professor X, with plenty of room for others to join the roster later. The most interesting part might be the format. Reports describe it as a story-driven single-player game built around more than one playable character, which opens the door to some genuinely creative design choices.

Picture running the same mission as different X-Men and getting an entirely different combat experience depending on who you're controlling.

That kind of replay value could set this apart from anything Insomniac Games has built before. Of course, none of this is locked in stone. Development plans shift constantly, projects get delayed or reworked, and sometimes things fall apart entirely, so it's worth treating all of this as a possible direction rather than a guarantee. Still, when you line up the reported timeline, it's hard not to get a little excited.

Wolverine in 2026, Venom possibly in 2027, Spider-Man 3 landing around 2028 or 2029, and an X-Men game potentially arriving in 2030 adds up to nearly a decade of connected superhero storytelling from a single studio. And there's no telling where things go from there. Insomniac Games could eventually branch into other corners of Marvel entirely, whether that's Punisher, Iron Man, or someone nobody's even speculating about yet.

If this universe keeps expanding the way it's rumored to, full crossovers between characters and storylines aren't out of the question either. What started as a single Spider-Man game has quietly turned into something much bigger, and it looks like Insomniac Games is just getting started.
