Ooblets Developer Respond to Epic Exclusive Backlash
Glumberland provides insight into the massive negative backlash following Ooblets' Epic Exclusive deal
News by Grayshadow on Aug 06, 2019
Epic Games Exclusive have become a norm for the PC gaming community. With both AAA and indie developers taking Epic's exclusive deal because of the increased revenue cut. Recently, developer Glumberland announced their title Ooblets would become an Epic Games Exclusive in a very unpopular way. So much that Epic Games took noticed and issued their own official statement. Now, Glumberland has also responded regarding their deal with Epic Games.
Over on Medium, Ben explained that their tone was misunderstood as "condescending" instead of "tongue-in-cheek". The backlash rose as according to Ben their Discord and subreddit was flooded with aggressive and negative behavior. Ben explained that he was foolish to "engaged with these people" with "jokes" and saying things in "exasperation". With those venting statements becoming more corrupt. Ben went on to share a lot of dark comments ranging from hate speech and physical threats. The comments are vile but this is expected from the internet.
Ben then expresses that these comments began to whittle him down but stands behind what he stated.
A portion of the gaming community is indeed horrendously toxic, entitled, immature, irrationally-angry, and prone to joining hate mobs over any inconsequential issue they can cook up. That was proven again through this entire experience. It was never my intention to alienate or antagonize anyone in our community who does not fit that description, and I hope that you can see my tone and pointed comments were not directed at you.
Ben did state he didn't stand behind the "mischaracterizations of his messages" and that he does care about their supporters. But the fabrication of evidence to destroy his livelihood was hard to bare.
Ben closed the article stating he hopes after this, more people will think before allowing a "mild annoyance" lead to "hurting a fellow human being". Ending with thanking Epic Games for their support.
It's definitely a lot to take in. Ben does express regret for how Glumberland handled the announcement but this doesn't excuse the shameful language that was thrown as the developer. It's okay to not like a decision from a company but threatening someone's personal well-being is going way too far.
