Resident Evil has been one of the most iconic, if not the most influential, horror survival franchises. The Resident Evil series includes several mainline entries with unique stories, remakes, animated films, live-action adaptations, comics, and tons of merchandise in every game store. We might even call it among the very first to lift this genre to a different high in video games. The latest remakes, Resident Evil 2 (2019) and Resident Evil 4 (2023) have both been remarkable for retaining the core appeal while modernizing the originals.
In July 2024, Capcom confirmed that a new Resident Evil mainline entry would be introduced, and later, in November, Resident Evil 9 was rumored to be that game. Capcom didn't officially reveal anything about Resident Evil 9, but the rumor about the game included some great detail, including the game's plot, characters, and settings. Capcom, however, might have some major ideas for the Resident Evil series' future in 2025 and 2026, including a remake of Resident Evil 0, a movie adaptation to accompany it, and, of course, Resident Evil 9.
Capcom formally announced last year that work on the next Resident Evil game was well underway. However, different leaks and rumors claimed that Capcom had shifted focus on several Resident Evil games after launching Dragon's Dogma 2 and Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. While Capcom is still concentrating on other projects, including Monster Hunter Wilds and Onimusha, 2025 is about to reveal some great news for Resident Evil fans.
A German film production company, Constantin Film, has made an agreement with Capcom that will allow them the film rights to the Resident Evil series. However, there is a catch for Constantin Film. To maintain the rights, they have to release a new Resident Evil movie every five fiscal years. Welcome to Raccoon City was released in 2021, so Constantin Film will have to release a new movie in 2026 if they are to preserve the rights. This likewise fits the 30th anniversary of Resident Evil.
A leak circulated from a Twitter account (Dusk), which hypothesized that Capcom is probably going to get a marketing contract with Nintendo for a Resident Evil 0 Remake, timed for the launch of Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025. Positioned as a major triple-A reworking in line with past remakes, the leak anticipated that the Resident Evil 0 Remake would be the perfect starting point for the franchise, sold as the opening of the narrative.
Although Resident Evil 0 Remake will surely be released as a multi-platformer, there might be a period of timed exclusivity for the Nintendo Switch 2. The leak claimed that the 30th anniversary of the franchise and the premiere of the live-action Resident Evil 0 film adaptation define the ideal moment for a remake of the game.
Resident Evil 9, however, is already on the horizon; Capcom wants a possible 2026 release. We won't be surprised if a new CG movie comes out for marketing at the same time, as has been the case for past franchise entries. Based on all these speculations, Capcom might organize a 30th-anniversary event with Resident Evil 0 Remake and Resident Evil 9 as symbolic bookends, signifying the start and finish of the narrative.
There were leaks about Resident Evil 0 Remake and Resident Evil 9 being developed simultaneously, leaving it up to Capcom to determine the sequence in which to market and publish them. From the leaks on Resident Evil 0 Remake from last year to the web film synopsis, the leaks really began to pile up. Furthermore, the marketing combination of the start and finish of the story with Resident Evil 0 Remake and Resident Evil 9 would be a great approach to promoting both games for the 30th anniversary.
Although Capcom did mention that Resident Evil Village signified the end of the Winters Family story, they never said the RE Engine era was totally ending. Before maybe going on something completely different with Resident Evil 10, wrapping it off with a trio of mainline games would seem like a fitting development for the series. If there is a remake for Resident Evil 0, though, this will be pretty good. The community highly appreciated the pre-rendered surroundings, characters, and classic Resident Evil gameplay.
Many of them did not entirely fit the Resident Evil 1 Remake, which could solve these problems. Though Resident Evil news has been quiet recently, we think major events are in store, and we might see an official statement sooner rather than later. Should any of these disclosures prove to be accurate, 2025 and 2026 hold much to excite. What will really happen, though, is interesting to know.
