San Diego Comic-Con is almost here, and if you're following gaming announcements, there's plenty to watch over the next few days. While the event is known for its movie and television reveals, the gaming lineup also has several notable franchises scheduled to appear.

God of War, Marvel's Wolverine, and Avatar are expected to receive attention, with each presentation likely offering something a little different. While each panel has its own focus, together they could deliver some of the biggest gaming moments of the convention.

Although other announcements could surface throughout the event, these three games stand out as the biggest attractions on the gaming side.

Avatar in particular has become one of the most intriguing prospects, thanks to recent developments surrounding its rumored RPG. It might deliver one of the event’s biggest surprises, even if it has received far less attention than the other titles.

God of War appears to be the most straightforward presentation heading into Comic-Con. A panel has already been confirmed, and unlike some convention panels that remain exclusive to attendees, this one will be recorded and made available afterward. Exactly when that recording will be released remains unclear, whether it's immediately after the panel, later that day, or sometime afterward.

While the panel is taking place, however, updates will likely come from attendees sharing information online. Any intriguing comments, behind-the-scenes details, or unexpected reveals may surface through social media before the official recording becomes available. Once the panel is uploaded, everyone will have the chance to see it up close and personal.

Expectations for God of War remain rather modest. The panel will probably be more talking than showing, as it’s unlikely to be a big reveal or long gameplay demonstration. Cory Barlog is expected to participate, and many fans believe he could drop a few hints or reveal small pieces of information about the future of the franchise.

Those smaller details may end up being the biggest takeaway. Even without gameplay footage, new comments about the next God of War project could generate plenty of discussion. Occasionally a brief remark from a developer is enough to spark months of speculation.

Marvel's Wolverine enters Comic-Con with a different level of anticipation.

Like God of War, the game will have its panel, but expectations are much higher that attendees could actually see something new. Early descriptions of the presentation have suggested there may be visual material rather than simply a discussion about the project.

Entertainment Weekly recently published an interview centered on Liam McIntyre, who voices Logan in the game, and also released two brand-new images of Wolverine. The feature included conversations with members of Insomniac Games, giving fans another look behind the scenes ahead of Comic-Con.

In an interview, McIntyre talked about how difficult it was to portray Logan and admitted that he was initially reluctant to embrace the more extreme aspects of the character. At the same time, the developers praised his performance, saying that he successfully captured both the humanity of Wolverine and the emotional depth underneath the character’s tough exterior.

Insomniac members also praised the effort that went into bringing Logan to life. McIntyre delivered a performance that exceeded expectations and helped create a version of Wolverine that balances action with character-driven storytelling, the developers said. That combination has only increased excitement ahead of the game's release.

With Marvel's Wolverine launching in less than a month and a half, there isn't much time left for additional marketing. Comic-Con represents one of the final major opportunities to showcase new footage before the game's release. After August, attention will likely shift toward review copies, previews, and launch preparations.

Any remaining reveals will probably come through Insomniac's own social media channels as launch day approaches. Once early September arrives, review codes are expected to begin reaching critics and content creators. That means Comic-Con could serve as one of the last significant public showcases before players get their hands on the game.

Avatar, however, may be the most compelling project to watch despite receiving far less attention.

Interest centers around the long-rumored AAA open-world RPG based on Avatar: The Last Airbender. The project has experienced a confusing development history over the past few years, leaving many fans uncertain about whether it still exists.

Marvel's Wolverine Wolverine Claws

Reports first surfaced during the period surrounding Summer Game Fest, when Paramount discussed several gaming projects, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. Around that time, it was revealed by the head of Paramount's gaming division that the Avatar RPG had been canceled. At the time, the project seemed completely finished.

Even then, there was still a small amount of optimism. The executive responsible for announcing the cancellation also explained that the idea itself wasn't necessarily gone forever. While development had stopped, he suggested there was still a chance the concept could return in a different form later.

The story became much more complicated after Avatar co-creator Bryan Konietzko addressed the situation on Instagram. Rather than confirming the game's cancellation, he suggested the project had gone through a major reset instead. His comments implied that the game hadn't been abandoned completely but had simply entered a different stage of development.

The most significant part of Konietzko's message involved San Diego Comic-Con itself. He specifically stated that fans would learn more about the game during the convention. Since then, discussion around the project has quieted considerably, with many people focusing instead on other Avatar releases.

An Avatar fighting game has also entered the spotlight recently, with reviews beginning to appear. Despite that release, the possibility of a full-scale RPG remains the more exciting prospect for many fans. The idea of a big role-playing game delving into the Avatar universe is still very much alive.

One can easily see the attraction.

An Avatar RPG could allow players to choose what bending style they want, level up their skills, customize their combat style, and explore the world at their own pace. The franchise offers enough lore and variety to support an experience far beyond what fans have seen from previous games.

That potential is one reason the mixed messaging surrounding the project has remained so interesting. On one hand, the project was officially described as canceled. On the other, the franchise's co-creator has continued speaking about it as though development simply changed direction rather than ending altogether.

Those differing explanations leave room for several possibilities. Perhaps the original version was canceled while a completely reworked version entered development afterward. If that's the case, Comic-Con may finally provide some clarity on the project's current status.

A major gameplay reveal still seems unlikely. If the game truly underwent a significant reset only recently, there probably isn't enough completed material to produce a full trailer. Instead, any announcement would more likely transform into an update explaining that a new agreement has been reached and development has officially resumed.

Such an announcement would still represent significant news, even if the finished game remains years away. If it were confirmed development was back on track, it would give fans something concrete after months of uncertainty. It would also establish a clear direction for the future of Avatar gaming.

Among the three featured franchises, Avatar carries the greatest sense of mystery because of that uncertainty.

Marvel's Wolverine seems focused on final marketing before launch, while God of War: Laufey is expected to provide smaller story-related updates rather than major reveals. Avatar, meanwhile, could entirely change expectations depending on what it announces.

Wolverine largely feels like a final opportunity for Insomniac to showcase anything it still wants players to see before release. Additional gameplay, cinematic footage, or developer insights would all fit naturally into this stage of the marketing cycle. With launch so close, nearly every remaining reveal carries extra importance.

God of War occupies a different position. Rather than signaling an immediate release, the panel seems more likely to serve as a bridge toward future announcements. Some tidbits of new lore, developer comments, or subtle hints about the next project could help set expectations without a full reveal.

This year’s Comic-Con is a fantastic event for gaming fans, with each presentation offering something different. God of War: Laufey could provide the first clues about what’s next for the franchise. Wolverine looks to be making its last promotional push, while Avatar may finally answer some long-standing questions about the future of its long-rumored RPG.
