Star Wars: KOTOR Remake Development & Release Update
The KOTOR Remake has been dormant for a while now, which has disappointed many fans.

Few games have had their development plagued with as many issues as the KOTOR Remake. It was originally supposed to be released in 2021, and instead of updates getting fans excited, they felt more of a wheeze than anything else. Due to its timeline and scale, many have stated that this project seems to be experiencing an indefinite delay.
Saber Interactive's CCO Tim Willits spoke about the game a while back, even if the title KOTOR Remake was left out. With Willits, I believe, he just did not want to discuss it openly, yet his social media assurances that no one's project has been lifted off their desks tell me that there are still some glimmers of hope. Usually, a lack of communication like this surrounds a project in a veil of uncertainty and leads to mostly negative conclusions.
The last important update we received regarding the KOTOR Remake was back in September 2022, when Saber Interactive received new funding. This funding allows them to attempt to complete multiple projects, including this Star Wars one. However, it, along with other projects, could be classified into the None of Your Business folder.
Originally, Aspyr Media was in charge of the game, but they later shifted to Saber Interactive. This led to a public perception that a major production had either been held up for an extended period or, worse, binned altogether. Not to speak of the bombshell that gamer insider Jeff Grubb dropped in November 2023 that the game went into some form of suspended development.
That stings. But lightsabers are on hold! A couple of days later, Jason Scheir, an industry insider, came out to refute Grubb's claims and said the movie was actually in production. Well, you can see, there are a multitude of contradicting statements.
It seems like the KOTOR Remake still has good reception from both fans and the gaming industry. However, with no developer statements, everyone is left scratching their heads. The iconic Knights of the Old Republic still has so much buzz surrounding it, which is why Saber Interactive most likely wants to take their time with it. They are probably trying to figure out a way to give the public something amazing while impeccably preserving the sanctity of the original. Nobody wants to rush a product, especially one that is as cherished as Star Wars.
For now, we can only sit on our hands and wish for the Knights of the Old Republic to release on the PS5 and PC. If Tim Willits says that all projects are being worked on, I'm pretty sure the KOTOR Remake is one of them. There's nothing more that can be done. So, all we can do is wish.
After being announced in 2021, the game went dark, which many game lovers predicted, but there was a lot left to be clarified. Many are arguing that it has been canceled, while others remain optimistic, suggesting that it's stuck somewhere in development limbo. While fans are still debating whether the game is completely dead or still has some life left in it, Tim Willits appeared on a podcast and claimed that all announced projects under active development are being worked on, which seemed like his attempt at calming people's panic.
While he has said nothing about KOTOR Remake, the loosely accepted understanding that floats around the internet is that it is still under some form of construction. Saber Interactive, for some reason, decided to share this information in late 2023 when they declared fresh investment into this game alongside several other ventures.
This conversation surely follows the project's controversy after the migration from Aspyr Media to Saber Interactive. There were a lot of rumors, and somewhere under the mess, there was a genuine belief that this project was completely canceled. Jeff Grubb jumped on the gossip in November, claiming the game was not in development anymore. Jason Schreier was very quick to strike back, saying, "No, that is wrong. It, in fact, was being worked on". That is where the many narratives emerged.
To cut this entire saga short, Saber Interactive is still pursuing the development of project KOTOR. Remake, they just won't talk about it. The studio might be attempting to fine-tune the gameplay for fans of the original game, but for the time being, we can only wait and see what unfolds. As a collective, we also wish for a proper announcement to come out soon because, honestly, The Knights of The Old Republic deserve better treatment.
