Super Mario Party Receives Multiplayer Update
The Switch game expands the possible on-line play.

Nintendo has announced a free update to Super Mario Party on Switch, three years after its initial release. The update now allows players to select three different modes: Mario Party, Partner Party, and mini-game Free Play. As an added bonus, players can select any board or character, even if they are normally non-accessible offline. However, player data will not be updated. Players can invite others from their friendslist directly or create private lobbies with password protection; these new modes cannot be match made with random online players. Unfortunately, only two split screen consoles can connect with each other. For four player matches, if two players are one their own separate console, the remaining players cannot share a single third Switch.
It is unclear why Nintendo suddenly released an update for an old game. It is possible that they are gauging interest in the series and want to collect data on those that return to online play. It could also be that this patch was planned far ahead and was simply delayed.
