Tomb Raider Catalyst Delayed Until 2028 After Surprise Announcement

Amazon Games quietly reveals the next Tomb Raider game is pushed back, with extra development time likely being the reason

Tomb Raider Catalyst has officially been delayed, and while the news is not exactly shocking, the way it was revealed was surprisingly easy to miss. The delay was not a major announcement from the developers but was casually mentioned during an interview with Christopher Ding from GameBusiness.com when discussing Amazon Luna.

It was almost just a side note with no big explanation or anything else. Most of the interview focused on Amazon Luna and Amazon’s vision for the streaming platform going forward as it competes with other services.

However, Ding did say during the discussion that the Tomb Raider remake is slated for February 12 of next year, with Catalyst coming in 2028. That small comment was enough for fans to realize that the next Tomb Raider adventure had been pushed back by another year.

The delay was one of the more predictable pieces of gaming news because of how things have unfolded recently.

Once Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis was moved to next year, many people began to wonder whether Amazon would really release two Tomb Raider games in the same year. There was always a possibility that one of the games would need additional time, especially if the developers wanted more time for polish and improvements.

At the same time, releasing two games in the same franchise during one year is not impossible. Some very popular franchises have put out several games in rapid succession without causing too much trouble. For example, a game released in February and another released in November would probably have enough time between releases.

But the more likely explanation is that Tomb Raider Catalyst just needs more development time. The game has faced uncertainty for a while, and the delay feels like the natural result of a project that needs additional polishing.

Once one Tomb Raider title was pushed back, it became easier to believe that Catalyst would face a similar situation. The extra time could help ensure the game launches in a stronger state. It also gives the development team more opportunity to refine the gameplay, improve technical performance, and avoid releasing the game before it is fully ready.

The way Amazon announced the delay has also created some interesting discussion. Because the information appeared in an article about Amazon Luna, some people have wondered whether the delay could be connected to Amazon’s plans for its streaming service.

Tomb Raider Catalyst is one of the few major AAA projects Amazon still has in development after several cancellations and changes within its gaming division.

The company has stepped away from some projects, including games that were previously receiving support. Because of that, Tomb Raider remains an important title for Amazon’s future gaming plans. Delaying a major release just to support a subscription service would be a risky move.

Amazon Luna still has a long way to go before becoming a major competitor in the gaming space. Building a large enough audience for a streaming platform takes time, and it would be difficult to imagine a flagship game being delayed purely to help that service grow.

The more reasonable explanation is that the developers simply want more time to finish the game properly. Additional development time could allow the team to polish the experience, fix any remaining issues, and make sure Tomb Raider Catalyst delivers the quality players expect when it finally launches.

The curious part is that the delay was revealed in such a quiet way.

Instead of a major announcement explaining the rationale for the delay, the news was simply included in a discussion about something else. Fans were waiting for news on Tomb Raider Catalyst, but they probably weren't expecting to hear about its release date change mentioned casually during an interview.

For now, though, the focus is probably on getting Tomb Raider Catalyst ready when it finally arrives in 2028. The additional development time should provide the team with greater opportunity to refine the experience and produce the sort of quality that players have come to expect from a major Tomb Raider release

It’s not surprising given the circumstances behind the project, but it’ll be disappointing for fans hoping to get their hands on it. Many players have been waiting for the next major Tomb Raider experience, so another year of waiting may feel frustrating despite the potential benefits of the extra development time.
