Things aren't looking too bright for Warner Bros. Games, especially after last week's cancellation of the Wonder Woman game and shutting down of multiple studios. However, it appears that they are reportedly doubling up their production for the new AAA Game of Thrones game. While the Game of Thrones game was rumored last year and could already be in the early development stages, a few details have leaked about what fans can expect.
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier writes that Warner Bros. is busy considering the potential for a Game of Thrones title that delves deeper into the lore and world of Westeros. The fans of the show are all too familiar with the disappointment that has been the Game of Thrones games, but Warner Bros. appears to have other plans. As more spin-offs and related projects under the Game of Thrones umbrella are underway, such as the popular House of the Dragon and the forthcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the Westeros universe is most certainly living its best life—and Warner Bros. would be glad to reap the benefits of increasing buzz around the IP.
The new game will be a AAA RPG that will allow players to explore the vast world of Westeros in a way that they never have before. Fans also anticipate that the game will have a more in-depth approach towards storytelling, such as a robust character creation and discovery system. If executed properly, this could be a chance for gamers to build their personalized characters and make their way through the complex politics and ferocious fighting that make Game of Thrones so great.
Schreier also reports that Warner Bros. is willing to avoid some of the pitfalls that have plagued previous Game of Thrones games. The company has claimed to shun the free-to-play and microtransactions routes that have proved controversial for gamers. They are steadfast in delivering a complete, final product that isn't reliant on constant purchasing or live-service concepts. It has seen hopefulness, especially in the wake of Hogwarts Legacy, which saw a welcoming reception for committing to offering an abundant, solo experience without obscene microtransactions.
This would represent a big change of direction for Warner Bros., especially in light of the problems that have been experienced with some of the studio's other more recent releases. The company has made a few errors in the past, including some of the lesser performances of some titles and the controversy surrounding microtransactions, but they're clearly trying to see if they can turn their reputation around in the gaming industry with a well-received Game of Thrones game.
The Game of Thrones series has a reputation for having a loyal audience with an insatiable demand for more. The game would allow players to delve into a realm of rich and complex characters, political maneuvering, and, of course, the iconic battles between various sides. With the success of other recent high-profile RPGs, such as The Witcher 3, there is huge potential for a game that offers a similar open-world experience but based on one of television's most popular shows.
There are currently no official revelations about the game's exact features, release windows, or platforms. But the fans expect Warner Bros. to produce a game that matches the Game of Thrones franchise. If done with the proper amount of care and attention to detail, a AAA Game of Thrones RPG would be the benchmark for future video game franchises based on TV and movie franchises.
Even though it's premature to predict if this game will meet fans' standards, the premise alone is sufficient to renew attention to the world of Game of Thrones video games. Warner Bros. must stick to the promise of this new game in order for it to be the change game of sorts that fans have been clamoring for. For now, gamers and series fans can only wait and watch as events unfold.
